Ice Hockey Duo Recognized as AHCA Academic All-Stars

In its fourth year of existence, Bittinger-Esser and Dorio received their first AHCA recognition

AHCA Announces Krampade/AHCA Academic All-American Scholars and All-Stars

EASTON, Massachusetts (August 13, 2020) – Rising sophomore defenders Sage Bittinger-Esser and John Dorio were selected as Krampade/American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Academic All-Stars, as announced by the organization this week.

Due to the effects of COVID-19 eligibility for this award this year included student-athletes attaining a 3.75 GPA or higher for the fall semester and participated in 40-percent of their school's games.

A total of 788 Division II-III men and women were awarded the honor, as 571 Division I recipients earned the recognition last week for a total of 1,359.

Bittinger-Esser, who is majoring in international business, earned a 3.88 grade-point average in the fall semester and 3.82 cumulative. He saw his name placed on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll with Academic Distinction for both semesters. He was also named to the Dean's List twice and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll twice. This is his first recognition from the AHCA. As a freshman he played in seven games, recoding two assists this season, the first coming against Westfield State University and the second coming in a Conference battle against Assumption University. The Silver Spring, Maryland native graduated from Sandy Spring Friends School and played with the Skipjacks Hockey Club, USPHL Premier.

Dorio, majoring in finance with a minor in economics, earned a 3.91 grade-point average for the fall semester and 3.69 cumulative. His name was placed on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll with Academic Distinction and Academic Honors. Dorio was also named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll twice and the Dean's List once. The freshman played in eight games this season, tallying his first-career assist against UMass Dartmouth. The Norwalk, Connecticut native graduated from the Taft School and played with the South Shore Kings (USPHL).

The Skyhawks won their third Northeast-10 Conference title as they defeated Saint Michael's College, 3-1 at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Massachusetts in early March. Stonehill wrapped up the season with a 13-15-5 overall mark and an 8-6-4 conference record, as they began the season just 1-7-1.
