Ice Hockey and Saint Anselm Skate to 3-3 Draw

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (November 15, 2019) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team played to its first overtime draw of the season with a 3-3 tie in game one against Saint Anselm College Friday night at Foxboro Sports Center in Northeast-10 Conference play.

By the Numbers:

  • Stonehill's (1-2-1, 0-2-1 NE10) Kayser Raei combined for three points with one goal and two assists, while Cameron Wright and Charles Page each chipped in their first goals of the season. Ryan Meade and Seth Murray also notched helpers in the tie.
  • In his ninth game of his career, Matthew Schoen recorded a career high 47 saves.
  • For Saint Anselm (2-2-1, 1-0-1 NE10), Shawn Moors led the team with two assists, while Andrew Andary, Matt Chisholm, and John Femia scored the goals. Dave Almeida and Ryan Spillane also notched helpers in the tie.
  • Nick Howard stopped 36 pucks between the pipes.
  • The Hawks outshot the Skyhawks 50-39, as Stonehill capitalized on two of five power play opportunities and Saint Anselm was successful on only one of six power plays.

How It Happened:

  • Six minutes into the game, Chisholm walked in towards the cage as Spillane dumped the puck off to him from the left circle to put the Hawks up 1-0 at 6:32. Stonehill went 0-for-2 on power play opportunities, as Saint Anselm went 0-for-1 in the first period.
  • Stonehill turned the game around with two power play goals in the second period to take over the lead, 2-1. After an initial shot by Page and Raei, Page was able to send it past Howard after shuffling to the middle for his first goal of the season and 10th of his career, as the Skyhawks capitalized on their third power play opportunity of the game at 5:03.
  • A minute and 30 seconds later, Raei netted his third goal of the season and ninth of his career, as Meade found him at the point and at 6:37, Stonehill saw their first lead of the game on their second power-play goal of the game, 2-1.

    Stonehill was called for two penalties and Saint Anselm was called for one, as neither team found the back of the cage in the remaining minutes of the second frame.
  • The Hawks were able to tie the game at two, 2-2, at 16:34 in the third period with a hit in the neutral zone, followed by an initial shot by Moors that was picked up and tucked the puck away by Femia for his first goal of the season on a power play opportunity.
  • Stonehill fought back and 30 seconds later, Wright collected a pass from Raei that was sent through the neutral zone. Wright challenged a defender and sent it just under the crossbar for his second goal of the season and 25th goal of his career at 17:07, for a one-goal lead, 3-2.  
  • With a faceoff down in their offensive zone, the Hawks zipped the puck around finding Andary open on the right side to tie the game with a minute and two seconds on the clock, 3-3, at 18:58.
  • Neither team was able to connect on a shot, as Saint Anselm held the edge in shots 4-1 in overtime as both teams skated to their first draw of the season.

Outside the Lines:

  • Stonehill has now skated in three overtime games and they are 1-1-1 while playing with extra time. This is Saint Anselm's second overtime game as they are now 1-0-1 with extra time.

Stonehill will host the Hawks tomorrow, Saturday, November 16 for game two with a puck drop at 5:10 p.m.
