Stonehill Announces 2019-20 Athletic Award Winners

EASTON, Mass. (May 14, 2020) – The Stonehill College athletic department announced its annual student-athlete award recipients by way of a virtual awards week through its social media channels, culminating with its senior honors today. 

2020 Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Awards


Dunlavy

Moreton

The Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete award is presented annually to senior student-athletes who have combined academic success, with a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average, with athletic achievement. This year's recipients are seniors Rachel Dunlavy from the volleyball program and men's basketball All-American Will Moreton.

Dunlavy, who graduated in December with a 3.98 cumulative grade point average and a Bachelor's Degree in economics at Stonehill, is a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain on the volleyball program. She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District first team and NE10 Academic All-Conference selection who received the NE10 Elite 24 Award for having the highest cumulative grade point average at the 2019 NE10 Volleyball Championship. Dunlavy is a two-time recipient of the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award and St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, medal for having the highest cumulative GPA on the volleyball team. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List all seven semesters, with a 4.0 GPA six of seven semesters, and received the Fred C. Petti Female Scholar-Athlete Award for having the highest cumulative GPA among all female student-athletes at the College three-straight years. She has been inducted to Omicron Delta Epsilon and Lambda Epsilon Sigma honor societies and has recently begun a full-time job with Alteryx.

Dunlavy appeared in 98 matches over her Stonehill volleyball career and finished ranked seventh in program history with 1,181 digs, including 447 her senior year which ranks fifth on the program's single-season list. She is a two-time NE10 Libero of the Week and ranked seventh among NE10 leaders with her 4.52 digs per set last fall.

Moreton, a finance major with a 3.48 cumulative grade point average at Stonehill, wrapped up an outstanding four-year career with the men's basketball program, starting all 114 games of his career, helping lead the Skyhawks back to the NCAA Tournament this winter. The 2019-20 NE10 Player of the Year earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and NE10 Academic All-Conference accolades while being named to the NABC Honors Court. He has been inducted to the Financial Management Association honor society at Stonehill and been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all seven semesters, Athletic Director's Honor Roll seven semesters, and Dean's List four semesters.

Moreton is a three-time All-NE10 selection, with first team honors this winter, earning All-America fourth team honors from Division II Bulletin as well as NABC All-District and Division II ADA All-East Region accolades. He has led Stonehill in scoring, rebounding and assists each of the last three seasons and finished his career ranked fourth in program history with 1,841 points and second with 265 career three-pointers. Moreton was selected to USA Basketball East Coast last summer as one of three small college players that toured and played in Greece.

 

2020 Fr. William Gartland, C.S.C., Awards

The Father William Gartland Award is presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete who have achieved excellence on the playing field over the course of their career. The award winners are recognized based on athletic accomplishments, citizenship, character, and personality. This year's Fr. Gartland Award recipients are senior Alexandra Vo of the NE10 Champion women's tennis program and football record-breaker Andrew Jamiel.

Vo led the Stonehill women's' tennis program to four-straight Northeast-10 Conference regular season championships, four-straight NCAA Tournament bids and the 2018 and 2019 NE10 Tournament Championships over the course of her four-year career. The six-time All-NE10 performer earned All-NE10 first team honors as No. 2 singles as a freshman, sophomore and senior and No. 2 doubles as a sophomore, while also collecting All-NE10 second team honors at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles her junior year. She finished her career ranked No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings and reached the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Division II East Region singles championship as a senior after advancing to the Round of 16 the two previous years.

Vo is a two-time NE10 All-Championships team selection who posted a perfect 40-0 record in NE10 singles matches over the course of her career, finishing 53-15 in singles play over her career and posting a career combined record of 92-46 in singles and doubles play, overall, including a combined 66-10 in the NE10. The 2016 NE10 Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team selection has earned ITA All-Academic Team honors and been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status multiple semesters.

Jamiel is a four-time All-NE10 selection who enjoyed a record-breaking career for the Stonehill football program. The two-time Don Hansen's All-Region and New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star selection is the first receiver in program history to surpass 300 receptions, 3,000 yards and record 30 touchdowns for their career. His school-record 309 career receptions rank second in NE10 history and seventh all-time in Division II. Jamiel's school-record 3,646 career yards rank third in NE10 history, while his 30 career touchdown receptions rank second all-time in program history for total touchdowns, and his school-record 7.92 career receptions per game ranks tenth in Division II history (2nd NE10). His 4,192 career all-purpose yards is second in program history and one of just two to surpass 4,000 yards, while his 184 career points is fourth all-time.

Jamiel, the 2016 NE10 Rookie of the Year, has earned All-NE10 first team honors twice over his career, including his senior season, and earned NE10 Offensive Player of the Week accolades four times over his career. He is one of two receivers in program history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season, with his 1,063 yards in 2019 ranks second on the program's single-season list, while his 91 receptions his freshman season has matches the program's single-season record and was just two shy of the NCAA Division II record for freshmen. Jamiel's 13 touchdown catches his sophomore season also matches the program's single-season record and he graduates owning five of the top six single-game reception totals in program history, including a record 18 catches on two occasions, setting a program record with his NE10 record 294 receiving yards in a win over Pace University in 2017.

The Father John McCarthy, C.S.C., Leadership Awards are presented annually in memory of one of Stonehill's most beloved figures to one senior male and female student-athlete in good academic standing and citizenship on the basis of their exemplary leadership attributes. This year's honorees are seniors Kelsey Shaw of the NE10 Champion women's basketball program and James Varney of the NE10 Champion ice hockey program.

Shaw, a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain, has been a key member of three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and capped her career by helping the Skyhawks sweep the Northeast-10 Northeast Division and NE10 Tournament titles her senior year. She was a key member of the Skyhawks 2018 Elite Eight squad and then was a captain for the Skyhawks last two NCAA Tournament teams. Shaw was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman and earned All-Tournament team honors at the 2020 NE10 Championship. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll multiple semesters. Shaw will earn her Bachelor's Degree in health science from the College and has committed to the Peace Corps.

Varney, a two-time Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee, is a four-year member of the Stonehill ice hockey team, serving as assistant captain as a senior in helping guide the Skyhawks to the NE10 Championship. He appeared in 60 games over his career, with five goals and six assists, including a pair of game-winning goals. Varney, who will earn his Bachelor's Degree in international business, has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll multiple semesters. He has been active with Stonehill ROTC over the last two years of his collegiate career, enlisting in ROTC Basic Officer Training during the summer of 2019, and being named an Executive Officer in December. He is president of the Stonehill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and co-vice president of NE10 SAAC, while becoming Northeast Regional Fellow for Team IMPACT and an on-campus ambassador for Make-a-Wish. Varney is a co-founder and vice president for the Stonehill chapter of Hope Happens Here and has also been involved with the Stonehill JED Foundation and Stonehill Leadership Board. He received the College's Vice President's Award this spring.

2020 Community Service Award

Stonehill presents its Community Service Award to the College's Hope Happens Here chapter. Founded by ice hockey seniors James Varney, Jack Scannell and Michael Seibold prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic year, Hope Happens Here is a student-led movement that aims to promote mental health awareness and mental wellbeing on college campuses, in particular student-athletes. Through events such as athletic awareness games, social media campaigns, presentations, and sponsored events, HHH is intent on starting the conversation to help break the negative stigma that surrounds issues regarding mental health. Stonehill's Hope Happens Here chapter now includes board members from six teams with support from all 21 programs.

2020 Matthew McDonough '99 Spirit Award

The 2020 Matthew McDonough, '99 Spirit Award, which is presented annually by the Stonehill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to the student who embodies the contagious spirit and outstanding character of Matt McDonough, '99, for whom the award commemorates, is awarded to senior Sydney Cheever. McDonough's memory remains etched upon the Stonehill campus and will continue to be remembered in the future as the ideal student-athlete, participating on the Stonehill football team and was an avid fan and attendee of all fellow sports competitions. His dedication and pride toward the community will always be highly regarded and this award memorializes his honorable character and service toward the Stonehill community.

Cheever is one of the most outgoing and supportive students at Stonehill. She is seen at every athletics event on campus, cheering on her fellow Skyhawks. She has a true love for all sports and is at every teams' games to cheer the athletes on. Her presence at the games livens all the fans and demonstrates what is means to be a Skyhawk. Cheever will even travel to away games and not only bring a crowd of Stonehill fans, but true Stonehill spirit as well. She has made a huge impact on all of Stonehill Athletics.

2020 Outstanding Faculty Award

Typically presented during the Stonehill athletic department's Academic Awards Breakfast, the department also announced the recipient of its Outstanding Faculty Award. The award is presented annually to a faculty member who has made a profound difference in the lives of student-athletes across our campus. For her support and dedication to the student-athletes of Stonehill, this unsung hero chosen as the recipient of the 2020 Outstanding Faculty Member award is Assistant Professor of Education, Kate Marin.

With 23 intercollegiate sports after announcing the addition of women's swimming for the 2020-21 academic year and women's ice hockey for 2021-22, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup six times, all coming within the last 15 years after earning the award for the winter athletics season in 2019-20. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first nine years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 95% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for tenth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with nine Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%.
