Assumption Edges Ice Hockey, 3-2

Seoane nets his fifth goal of the season, sixth career tally

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (January 24, 2020) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was tripped up by Assumption College in game two of the three-game series with a score of 3-2 Friday night at Foxboro Sports Center in Northeast-10 Conference play.

By the Numbers:

  • Stonehill's (6-9-2, 3-5-1 NE10) Cameron Wright and Mike Seoane found the back of the cage, while Jack Hall and John Peloso registered the assists.
  • Senior Matthew Schoen registered 39 saves.
  • Assumption College (9-7-2, 6-3-0 NE10) saw John Fine-Lease, Sean O'Connell, and Brendan Philippon with the tallies, while Roche chipped in two points with two assists. Colin Philippon, Mike D'Ambrosio, and Christopher Barone each recorded a helper.
  • The Greyhounds outshot the Skyhawks, 42-27, as both teams capitalized on one of their three power plays during the game.

How It Happened:

  • Schoen was challenged late in the first period with multiple shots from the Greyhounds, but the Skyhawks came up on top as Joshua Loveridge picked up the loose puck from around the boards. He flung the puck forward for Hall to find it at center ice and he skated it into their offensive zone to flick to towards Wright who wristed it home for a 1-0 lead at 15:36. This was Wright's ninth goal of the season.
  • On Assumption's first power play of the game in the second period, the Greyhounds tried to play the puck off a deflection but were unsuccessful. D'Ambrosio collected the loose dish and found Roche at the top of the key who slapped it on net before Fine-Lease was able to redirect it in past Schoen for the equalizer at 7:15.
  • Just over five later, the Greyhounds made it 2-1 on an O'Connell goal at 12:55 in the second period. O'Connell collected the puck after the Skyhawks made an attempt on net and he skated it straight through the neutral zone before finding the back of the cage for a one-goal advantage.

  • Wright scored his ninth goal of the season and 32nd of his career
Late in the third period, Assumption made it a two-goal advantage as Brendan Philippon capitalized on the Greyhounds' possession in the 17th minute of the period. Phillippon was helped by Colin Philippon and Robert Roche at 17:07.
  • Assumption was called for their first penalty in the game since the first period with a late cross-checking call at 18:13. One minute and 16-seconds later, Peloso skated the puck down ice after setting up with a 6-on-4 opportunity as the Skyhawks pulled Schoen for the extra skater. Peloso headed straight for the net as he centered it for Seoane who put it home for his fifth goal of the season at 19:29. Neither team was able to get a shot off in the remaining seconds as the Greyhounds would hold on for the win.

Outside the Glass:

  • Assumption continued its five-game win streak as they improved to 9-7-2 overall and 6-3-0 in NE10 play.
  • The Greyhounds are also on a five-game win streak against the Skyhawks, as Stonehill last defeated Assumption on February 3, 2018 with a score of 4-1.
