Shorthanded Ice Hockey Soars Past Saint Michael’s, 2-1

Meade nets his third-straight goal in as many games

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (January 21, 2020) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team put up two shorthanded goals to top Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College, 2-1, Tuesday night at Foxboro Sports Center.

By the Numbers:

  • Stonehill's (6-8-2, 3-4-1 NE10) Connor Jewett and Ryan Meade each tallied a shorthanded goal in the win, while Kayser Raei and Jack Scannell recorded the helpers.
  • Senior Matthew Schoen registered 27 saves in the win.
  • Saint Michael's College (9-7-2, 5-4-1 NE10) saw Matt Schreiner with the equalizer, and Matt Egan and Jeremy Routh with the assists. Tim Decker stopped 24 shots in the loss.
  • The Purple Knights outshot the Skyhawks, 26-28, as neither team was able to capitalize on a power play opportunity. Stonehill went 0-for-2 and Saint Michael's went 0-for-4 in the Conference battle.

How It Happened:

  • In the first period, Stonehill saw back-to-back power play opportunities with 12 seconds separating the two. Between the two chances, the Skyhawks combined for 10 shots but none of them dropped as Saint Michael's killed four minutes of penalties early in the frame.
  • Stonehill was called for their own penalty later in the first period, and the Skyhawks held the Purple Knights to three shots on their first power play opportunity.
  • At 3:03 in the second period, Stonehill was called for their second penalty of the game and 53 seconds into the short-handed opportunity, the Skyhawks' Raei reached for a loose puck that went wide of the net on a Purple Knight shot. He then raced up the ice and sent a sharp pass to Jewett who found an opening on the right side of the cage at 3:56 for a 1-0 advantage. This was Jewett's second shorthanded goal of his career and second goal of the season, as well as Raei's eighth assist of the season and 13th career.

Six minutes later, Stonehill won a faceoff in their offensive zone and tried to get shots off, but the Skyhawks turned the puck over as Routh carried the puck through the neutral zone. He found Egan near the left faceoff circle who crossed it to Schreiner at 10:29 for the equalizer, 1-1.
  • Roughly two minutes before the end of the second frame Stonehill saw an open opportunity as they outskated the Purple Knights down the ice, as Raei launched a strike on net as he just missed and hit the pipe on the Skyhawks' third shorthanded chance of the game.
  • Saint Michael's saw its fourth power play opportunity in the third period and 13 seconds before the end of the penalty Stonehill cut off a pass in their defensive zone as Scannell quickly gave up the puck to Meade in the neutral zone. The senior then rushed down the ice and passed it back and forth before sending it past Decker for a 2-1 lead at 5:43.
