EASTON, Mass. (February 7, 2023)- For her performance throughout the month of January, Stonehill College women's ice hockey freshman forward, Alexis Petford was named a runner-up for Rookie of the Month honors from the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA). The official announcement from the organization's offices came on Tuesday afternoon. It is Petford's third time overall being named a runner-up for the HCA Rookie of the Month.

Petford continues her strong rookie campaign as the first-year forward has already been named a New England Women's Hockey Alliance Rookie of the Week twice. She is just one of four Skyhawks so far this season to have won a weekly NEWHA award joining Bailey FeeneyHanna Zukow, and Gracie Sacca.

Petford is currently second in the nation in goals (22) and third in goals on average at .72. In terms of the conference, Petford is ranked within the top 10 in multiple categories that include: goals (first), plus/minus (first), points (second), and assists (eighth).

She currently leads the team in goals, assists (12), points (34), and is a team-best +21. Petford's best game last month came in an 8-3 road victory over fellow NEWHA member, Saint Anselme College where Petford netted the program's first hat trick and was a +2 on the day as well.

Last weekend against NEWHA leader, Long Island, Petford netted one goal and she has now scored in three of her last five games. Overall this past month, Petford scored in five of the squad's eight games played and recorded at least one point in seven of those eight.

Stonehill wraps up NEWHA play with a two-game set next weekend at Saint Michael's College on Friday, February 10 at 7:10 p.m. The squad then concludes the regular season with a road matchup at Syracuse University on Saturday, February 18 at 2 p.m.

About the HCA

Beginning in the 1990s, the commissioners of the NCAA's Division I ice hockey conferences began meeting regularly to discuss ways to grow the sport of college hockey. Their meetings and activities were formalized when the Hockey Commissioners Association was created in 2003. At first, the HCA dealt solely with men's hockey issues. The Women's Hockey Commissioners Association was formed in 2014.

In 2009, the HCA negotiated with USA Hockey to secure funding for a marketing arm for Division I Men's hockey, College Hockey Inc. (CHI). Division I Men's hockey has benefited from the work of CHI, as have hundreds of families who have been provided information and guidance as they make important choices for their hockey-playing sons.
