Zukow Named To WHCA Women's Hockey Goalie Of The Year Watchlist

Women's Hockey Commissioners Association Full Release

Zukow

EASTON, Mass. (January 11, 2023)- Stonehill women's ice hockey goaltender, Hanna Zukow was named one of 27 Women's Hockey Commissioners Association finalists who will vie for the title of 2023 National Women's Goalie of the Year. Zukow is just one of five nominees from the New England Women's Hockey Alliance. The award was created in 2021 to recognize the top female goalie in NCAA Division I hockey. Northeastern University's Aerin Frankel, who graduated in 2022, was the recipient in the first two years the award was presented.

The goalies to watch come from all five NCAA Division I conferences with 12 from the United States, nine from Canada, and six from Europe (two from Sweden and one each from Finland and Germany, Norway, Slovenia, and Switzerland).

The conference offices have come up with this initial "Watch List" of outstanding goalies. A committee of voters — made up of a cross-section of coaches, administrators, and media — will pare this list down within the next two weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in March during the NCAA Frozen Four.

On the year, Zukow is one of the top five goalies in the NEWHA as she ranks highly in multiple categories including: goals-against average (2.56-fourth), save percentage (.918-fifth), saves (446-fifth), and win percentage (.531-fourth). She is just one of four goaltenders in the NEWHA with a winning percentage above .500.

Zukow has also been named a NEWHA Goalie of the Week three times this year including as recently as this past week for her split against Sacred Heart. The sophomore netminder ended up with 55 saves across the two games against Sacred Heart. She made 30 saves on 34 shots in the 4-3 opener on Friday but then delivered 25 saves on 26 shots in Saturday's 2-1 win. For Zukow, it marked her 10th game of the season with 25 or more saves. In games where she has let up two or fewer goals, the Skyhawks are 8-0-1.

Stonehill is back in action this weekend with a home and home against NEWHA member, Franklin Pierce University on Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m in Winchendon, Mass. The Purple and White continue conference play to round out the month of January with a home and home versus Saint Anselm College (January 20-21) and at Post University (January 27-28).
