The Details

  • Stonehill started the scoring off early with 9:15 left in the opening frame courtesy of Petford. Feeney had the puck in the left face-off circle on the Sharks side of the ice and then found an open Petford in the other face-off circle who put home a one-timer. Petford's goal is her 22nd of the year and not only leads the New England Women's Hockey Alliance but leads the entire country.
  • Not long after Petford's goal, the Skyhawks doubled their lead with 8:44 in the opening frame after Achtyl took the puck up the boards on the right side and found an open Kenmore across the ice to beat Holm.
  • However, a couple of minutes later at 6:47, Long Island trimmed the Stonehill lead to one after Fairman put a shot on net that deflected off Morrow's stick to Kearns who snuck the puck past Zukow.
  • In the second period, Stonehill outshot Long Island 12-9 led by Sydney Russell, Petford, Maeve Carey, and Gracie Sacca with two apiece but were each turned away by Holm. With just 43 seconds left in the second, the Sharks evened the contest at two when Bouveur was behind the Stonehill net and found a cutting Morrow who beat Zukow stick side.
  • Both sides played back and forth in the third and Long Island had a great scoring chance in the third. At one point they had a five-on-two opportunity but thanks to Stonehill's stellar power play defense, and strong goaltending from Zukow, the squad did not let up a goal and kept things within reach.
  • Toward the of the frame, Hannah Squires and Paige Whaley had two opportunities to pull the Skyhawks ahead, but were turned away by Holm and both teams headed into overtime.
  • The Skyhawks dominated overtime as the Purple and White outshot the Sharks, 4-0 including a great look with seven seconds left by Kathryn Karo who put a hard shot on Holm but the Long Island netminder made the save for the 2-2 draw.
