The Details

  • UConn came out strong in the opening frame as the Huskies tacked on two goals relatively close to each other. Stockdale found the back of the net at 12:19 followed by Magier a little over a minute later at 13:34 making it 2-0.
  • As the second period got underway, UConn's offense continued where they left off when Ware added their third goal of the night with 12:44 left in the second.
  • However, Stonehill responded with a little over 10 minutes left in the period (10:47) when Lucie Turcotte put a shot on net, but after being turned away by Warrener, Mia Kenmore corralled the loose puck in front of the UConn net and flipped it over Warrener as she tried to grab the puck.
  • The Skyhawks had another opportunity later in the second with just a little under 10 minutes (8:12), Maddison Achtyl had two great back-to-back looks but Warrener ended up making the saves.
  • Later in the second, UConn would add three more goals from the sticks of Habish (13:29), Peterson (15:13), and Campbell (18:44).
  • Stonehill's defense in the third period stepped up as the squad only allowed one goal (Stockdale, 10:58). Just 3:27 into the third period, Stonehill generated a power play opportunity and Gracie Sacca had a solid look on net, but like earlier, Warrener made yet another save and held on for the 7-1 win.
  • Overall on the night, Zukow made 23 saves in her collegiate debut in 40 minutes of action. As the third period got underway, Stone took over for Zukow in net and made 15 saves.

Watchorn's Wisdom

"The energy was good, I think what we would've expected," said Stonehill women's ice hockey head coach Tara Watchorn. "But there was a lot of passion behind the energy and we were able to really, really channel that. I think the girls were excited to work for each other. it was a historic moment and I think that the gravity of that, they understood and it was a lot of fun to just be able to take the ice together for the first time. But I don't know if it's hit me yet, to be honest. You get into the preseason, you're just working one day at a time to really build that culture and build that foundation and it's, it's kind of crazy to think that we finally got out there today, so just trying to take it all in and enjoy the moment myself, but it's a pretty cool feeling. Now we're going to get a good cool down in for the girls. Going to make sure they get some food in them, and then we'll regroup. We'll get a lot of rest and be ready to go tomorrow. I think going back to our home rank is going to bring some adrenaline, which we'll definitely need going into game number two."
