Top of the lineup leads Kohawks to victory in clash of regionally ranked teams

CASSELBERRY, Fla. (March 4, 2013) – Coe College of Iowa, ranked 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Central Regional rankings, got strong production from the top of its lineup to claim a 5-4 victory over Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the ITA Division II East Regional rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Red Bug Lake Park this afternoon.

Junior Tai Lucero (Odessa, Texas/Permian), the tenth-ranked singles player in her region by ITA, and freshman Gia Poynter (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Park) led Coe to the victory as double-winners. Lucero and senior Michelle Schupbach (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Columbus), the fourth-ranked doubles team in their region, combined for an 8-2 win at No. 1 singles. Lucero went on to claim a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Stonehill freshman Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), ranked 19th in the ITA East Regional singles rankings, at No. 1 singles.

Poynter and freshman Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles as Coe took two of three doubles matches. Poynter followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stonehill freshman Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) at No. 3 singles. Freshman Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) also claimed a singles win for the Kohawks as she rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 triumph over sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 2 singles to clinch the team win.

Senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) were double-winners to lead Stonehill. The duo combined for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles before Martin posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Coe junior Elizabeth Hoffmann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier). Haedrich added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over freshman Diannah Watson (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) at No. 6 singles. Senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) also notched a point for the Skyhawks with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over sophomore Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin).

Stonehill (8-1, 5-0 NE-10) looks to bounce back tomorrow when it faces Cedarville (Ohio) College at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., at noon The Skyhawks next home match is Wednesday, March 13, when it hosts College of the Holy Cross for a makeup match at 3 p.m. Coe (11-1, 7-0 IIAC) faces Meredith College tomorrow.
