Skyhawks cruise in spring home opener against Division I foe

EASTON, Mass. (March 13, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, opened its spring home schedule with a dominant 8-1 victory over College of the Holy Cross in non-conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Freshmen Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy), junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) and senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were all double-winners to lead Stonehill to its third-straight win.

Toegemann and Lawrence combined for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Stonehill swept the three doubles matches. Toegemann followed with a come from behind 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 victory at No. 2 singles over freshman Jaclyn Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic), while Lawrence posted a 6-0, 6-2 decision over junior Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y./Ursuline) at No. 3 singles.

Paradiso, the 19th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over sophomore Taylor Stathis (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Dominican Academy) after combining with freshman Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Martin and Haedrich teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then Martin cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over freshman Addie Devine (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Catherine McAuley). Haedrich then followed up with an 8-1 pro-set decision over freshman Cassie Deng (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Abby Henry (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) picked up the lone point for Holy Cross with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 victory over Kump at No. 4 singles.

Stonehill (11-1, 5-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Concordia (N.Y.) College, ranked 44th in the ITA Division II poll and third in the East Region, for a key non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. Holy Cross (2-4) returns to action on Monday, March 18, visits the University of Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m.
