Stonehill Cruises Against Adelphi, 8-1

Toegemann and Frost lead Skyhawks to key NE-10 win

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings released on Wednesday, picked up its biggest win of the season to date with a commanding 8-1 victory over Adelphi University, ranked ninth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and freshman Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) led four double-winners for Stonehill in the win. The duo, ranked ninth in the ITA East Regional doubles rankings, combined for a huge 8-3 win over Adelphi senior Maria Toft (Copenhagen, Denmark) and sophomore Bianca Posa (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North), the region's eighth-ranked doubles team, at No. 1. Toegemann followed that up with a 7-5, 6-0 win over senior Michelle Gurda (Greenville, N.Y./Minisink) at No. 2 singles, while Frost added a 6-4, 6-4 decision over senior Samra Redzematovic (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) at No. 4.

Senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) were also double-winners for Stonehill, including a 9-8 (7-4) victory at No. 2 doubles to complete a sweep of the three doubles matches that set a tone for the runaway win. Martin also rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 triumph over Posa at No. 5 singles, while Haedrich clinched an 8-6 win over junior Taylor King (Roosevelt, N.Y./Baldwin).

Sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) improved to a combined 34-0 in singles and doubles play over her two year career at Stonehill in NE-10 matches with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Adelphi junior Gaby Adia (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) at No. 3 singles. Freshmen Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) combined for the Skyhawks remaining point with their 8-5 decision over Adia and King at No. 3 doubles.

Toft, the eighth-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, claimed Adelphi's lone point with her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Paradiso, ranked 19th in the region, at No. 1 singles.

Stonehill (12-2, 6-0 NE-10) is back in action on Sunday when it continues its five match home stand with a key regional clash with Holy Family University, ranked tenth in the region, at 11 a.m. Adelphi (6-5, 3-2 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Sunday at noon.
