NCAA TOURNAMENT: #50 Chestnut Hills Rallies Past Stonehill, 5-3

Fifth-seeded Griffins advance to face top-seeded and 15th-ranked NYIT

EASTON, Mass. (April 27, 2013) – Fifth-seeded Chestnut Hill College, ranked 50th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, rallied from a 3-1 deficit to claim a 5-3 triumph over fourth-seeded and host Stonehill College in first round action of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis East Regional at Charles Watt Tennis Courts today.

Chestnut Hill (19-8, 6-2 CACC) advances to tomorrow's second round where it will square off against top-seeded and 15th-ranked New York Institute of Technology (22-3, 6-1 ECC) at Watt Courts at 9 a.m. Stonehill (20-4, 11-1 NE-10) wraps up just its second 20-win season in program history, having won its fourth Northeast-10 Conference Championship and earning a fifth-straight NCAA Tournament bid and eighth overall.

Chestnut Hill fell behind 3-1 after Stonehill won two of the three doubles matches and then claimed the first singles victory of the afternoon before the Griffins reeled off four straight singles matches to clinch the win. Junior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and sophomore Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) were double-winners to lead the Griffins to victory. The duo, ranked seventh in the ITA East Regional doubles rankings, claimed Chestnut Hill's lone doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then both combined to close out Stonehill in singles play.

Dennis, ranked 13th in the ITA East Regional singles rankings, clinched the win for Chestnut Hill by holding off Stonehill sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), ranked 15th in the region, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Oechsle posted a back and forth 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 triumph over senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) at No. 4 singles to give the Griffins their first lead of the afternoon.

Senior Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia), ranked 19th in the region, and freshman Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario/The Bishop Strachan School) also posted big singles wins for Chestnut Hill. Parapouras recorded a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Stonehill sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 3 singles, while Williams-Mulesa snapped junior Kaitlyn Martin's (Medway, Mass./Medway) 15-match winning streak in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

Freshman Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) was a double-winner to lead Stonehill. She teamed up with classmate Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) for an 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles over Williams-Mulesa and freshman Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) to give the Skyhawks their first point of the day. Kump then gave Stonehill a 3-1 advantage by closing out the first singles match of the afternoon, 6-0, 6-0 over Owens at No. 6.

Toegemann and Frost, the sixth-ranked doubles team in the ITA East rankings, rallied from a 5-2 deficit against Parapouras and senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus), ranked fourth in the region, to claim an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles to clinch the 2-1 Stonehill edge after doubles play.
