Stonehill Tops Philadelphia, 7-2

Doubles sweep sends Skyhawks on their way to victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 21, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, picked up a key in region win with a 7-2 decision over Philadelphia University, ranked tenth in the region, in non-conference women's tennis action at Abraham Salaman Courts this afternoon.

Stonehill rode the wave of a sweep of its three doubles victories to the key win as freshman Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led four double-winners for the Skyhawks. Junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit), sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) also posted a pair of victories on the day.

Kump rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 triumph at No. 2 singles over Philadelphia freshman Kaylee Fennern (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Bonneville) after she combined with Lawrence to sweep their match at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. Lawrence topped junior Sayre Limburg (New London, N.H./Proctor Academy) at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1.

Frost cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Philadelphia sophomore Olivia Amato (Hartford, Conn./Cheshire) after combining with freshman Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) for an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles. Toegemann didn't drop a game in notching a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles over junior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett). Toegemann also teamed up with senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Isabella Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador) and sophomore Magill Kurts (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) posted wins to account for Philadelphia's two points on the afternoon. Espinosa topped Paradiso 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Kurts defeated Stonehill junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

Stonehill (3-0, 2-0 NE-10) and Philadelphia (5-4, 2-3 NE-10) will both participate in the ITA East Regional Championships at Arthur Ashe Center in Philadelphia tomorrow through Monday. The Skyhawks next home match isn't until October 9, when it hosts the University of New Haven for a Conference clash at 3 p.m.
