Stonehill Sweeps Merrimack on Senior Day, 9-0

Frost leads double-winners for Skyhawks, Martin wins 14th-straight

EASTON, Mass. (April 13, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional and sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region rankings, closed out the regular season with a 9-0 sweep of Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today.

Senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) led five double-winners for Stonehill on Senior Day, while junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) was also a double-winner and notched her 14th-straight singles victory to lead the Skyhawks to victory. Frost and freshman Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), the ninth-ranked doubles team in the East Region, combined for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles before Frost added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles over Merrimack senior Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) to cap the regular season with a 12-0 singles record in NE-10 matches. Toegemann also notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over junior Kara Hole (Portsmouth, R.I./The Lincoln School).

Martin, who also finishes the regular season with a 12-0 singles record in NE-10 matches, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 over freshman Tiane Dame (Wachusett, Mass./Wachusett Regional) for her 14th-straight singles triumph. Martin and senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) added an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles.

Freshmen Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) rounded out the double-winners for Stonehill, starting with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Paradiso, ranked 19th in the ITA East Regional singles rankings, breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over sophomore Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela), while Kump posted an 8-0 pro-set win at No. 6 singles over senior Katie Veasey (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane). Sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) also collected a point for Stonehill with her 6-4, 6-2 win over sophomore Rachel Muller (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) at No. 3 singles.

Stonehill (18-3, 11-1 NE-10) has earned a first round bye for the upcoming NE-10 Tournament and will host a semifinal round match on Thursday, April 18, against the winner of a Tuesday first round clash between No. 3-seeded Saint Michael's College and 6th-seeded University of New Haven. Merrimack (7-12, 6-6 NE-10) hosts the University of Hartford tomorrow at 10 a.m.
