Freshmen lead Skyhawks to victory in spring opener
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 3, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, opened its spring break schedule with an 8-1 victory over Aquinas (Mich.) College in non-conference women's tennis action at Lake Cane Tennis Center this afternoon.
Freshmen Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led the double-winners for Stonehill. The duo combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles and then Paradiso posted a back and forth 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 decision over junior Lauren Ramey at No. 1 singles. Kump rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 win over sophomore Ariana Kabodian at No. 3 singles.
Senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) were also double-winners for Stonehill. They combined for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles and then Martin posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over freshman Marjeanne Bothma at No. 5 singles, while Haedrich notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6. Sophomore Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) added a straight sets win at No. 2 singles, while senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) had a straight sets win at No. 4.
Ramey and freshman Rilie DuShane combined to post the lone point for Aquinas with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Lawrence and Frost.
Stonehill (8-0, 5-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow when it faces Coe College of Iowa at Red Bug Lake Park in Casselberry, Fla., at noon. The Skyhawks next home match is Wednesday, March 13, when it hosts College of the Holy Cross for a makeup match at 3 p.m. Aquinas (4-4, 0-0 WHAC) faces Webber International College on Tuesday.
