Toegemann Earns NE-10 Rookie of the Week Honors

Narragansett, R.I., native honored after reaching B-Singles finals at ITA's

EASTON, Mass. (September 25, 2012) – Stonehill College freshman Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Rookie of the Week for women's tennis by the league office this afternoon.

Toegemann, who earns the first weekly honor of her career, helped lead Stonehill to a key in-region win and then had a strong showing at the ITA East Regional in Philadelphia over the weekend. She was a combined 10-2 in singles and doubles play for the week as she reached the B-Singles final at the ITA's and also combined with senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) to advance to the B-Doubles quarterfinals.

Toegemann was a double-winner to help lead the Skyhawks to a key 7-2 victory over Philadelphia University, ranked tenth in the East Region on Friday. She and Haedrich cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles before she breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles

Toegemann then became the fourth Stonehill women's tennis player to reach the B-Singles final in as many seasons to highlight the Skyhawks trip to the ITA East Regional in Philadelphia. Toegemann opened the event with an 8-3 victory over Goldey-Beacom College senior Melanie Bonomo in the first round. She topped Saint Michael's College senior Jean-Marie McGrath 8-4 in the second round before defeating Chestnut Hill College freshman Iman Williams-Musela 8-5 in the third round. Toegemann posted an 8-4 victory over Goldey-Beacom senior Vanessa Leon in the quarters before advancing to the finals with a walkover in the semifinals after Molloy's Tatiana Rajaona withdrew. Concordia (N.Y.) College senior Clara Catanzano posted an 8-4 victory in the final.

Toegemann and Haedrich reached the B-Doubles quarterfinals before having their run ended by teammates Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian),8-3. Toegemann and Haedrich opened with an 8-2 win over Molloy College's Nikki Gloria and Danielle Byrnes in the first round. The Skyhawk duo followed with an 8-5 win over Bonomo and Anastasia Melnikova from Goldey-Beacom in the second round before topping Kaylee Fennern and Elizabeth Verbits from Philadelphia University, 8-4 in the Round of 16

Toegemann, whose older sister Amy Toegemann, '12, was a four year standout for Stonehill before graduating last spring, has posted a combined 14-2 record in singles and doubles play through the first two weeks of her collegiate career. She is 8-1 in singles play, including a 2-0 record in NE-10 matches and a 3-0 clip at No. 5 singles. Toegemann and Haedrich have posted a 6-1 doubles record, including a 2-0 clip in NE-10 play and 3-0 record at No. 3 doubles.

Stonehill (3-0, 2-0 NE-10), ranked fifth in the ITA East Regional rankings, is back in action on Thursday when it visits Post University for a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Tuesday, October 9, when they host the University of New Haven for a Northeast-10 contest at 3 p.m.
