Women's Hockey to Host NMDP Registry Event

EASTON, Mass. (January 18, 2024) – In an effort to help people living with rare illnesses get life-saving bone marrow or stem cell transplants, the Stonehill women's ice hockey program has teamed up with the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) for an on-campus registry and swab event on Thursday, January 25 taking place inside Meehan Hall in front of the Great Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who attend will have the chance to join the registry and potentially save a life.

The Skyhawks will then host a "Get in the Game" sponsored event the following day at the Bridgewater Ice Arena against Sacred Heart University at 5 p.m. There will be a table at the entrance to the Bridgewater Ice Arena that will be handing out swab kits to peers interested in joining the registry.

GITG is the most successful donor recruitment program through NMDP, the global leader in bone marrow transplantation services and research. Each spring, athletic teams across the country host an event on campus, allowing them to educate peers on the importance of joining the national registry.

Sophomore defender Hannah Squires initiated this collaboration between the two programs after she courageously volunteered to donate her stem cells to potentially save the life of a 70-year-old cancer patient back in October. After learning about the non-profit organization, Squires could not wait to register and, hopefully, one day be the match for someone in need.

About NMDP

The National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping every patient get the lifesaving transplant they need. As trusted leaders in advancing treatments for those facing life-threatening blood cancers, we provide ground-breaking research, innovative technologies, patient support, and education that save lives.

NMDP has facilitated more than 120,000 blood stem cell transplants and 6,714 transplants last year to give patients hope for a future.

The organization continues to develop services and interactive technologies used by transplant experts worldwide to reach more patients.

NMDP continues to lead the way in developing new cellular therapies, advancing services to speed the transplant process, and improving treatments for post-transplant complications. They invest in dedicated researchers whose countless hours in the lab and caring for patients have helped more patients than ever before receive a transplant.
