Women's Hockey Comes Up Short Against LIU, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 17, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team battled the defending NEWHA Champion Long Island University (LIU) Sharks to a tough 1-0 decision Friday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks dip to 7-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the Sharks improve to 9-4 overall and 9-0 against conference opponents.

Highlights

  • Senior captain Grace Parker finished with a team and game-high seven shots on goal.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone got the start and made 18 saves in goal for Stonehill.
  • Sophomore defender Emma Mortl netted her first collegiate goal off senior Sarah Rourke's fifth assist of the season.
  • Junior netminder Tindra Holm picked up the win in between the pipes for LIU after stopping all 44 shots she faced in net.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill dominated position throughout the opening 10 minutes of the contest not allowing a shot or defensive zone faceoff to be taken until the 10:01 mark of the first period.
  • The Skyhawks outshot LIU 17-6 in the first period, however, both sides would remain scoreless heading into the first intermission.
  • Coming out of the break, the two teams would go back and forth trading scoring chances until Stone would stand tall in net shutting down an empty net scoring chance for the Sharks to keep the game scoreless midway through the second period.
  • However, at the 7:13 mark of the middle frame, LIU would light the lamp for the first score of the game off Mortl's first career goal.
  • The second period goal would prove to be the decider as despite outshooting the Sharks 19-4 in the final frame of regulation the Skyhawks would come up short in the end by a final score of 1-0.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill outshot LIU 44-19 throughout the conference matchup.
  • The Sharks now lead the all-time series between the two sides, 4-0-1.
  • Stonehill dominated the faceoff circle, winning 41 of 64 puck drops, with senior captain Paige Whaley and junior Josie Mendeszoon finishing with 10 and 12 wins, respectively.
