EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (February 3, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team dropped its series finale on the road to Long Island University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks dip to 13-15-2 overall and 13-9-2 in conference play, while the Sharks improve to 21-8 overall and 21-2 against NEWHA opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Alexis Petford extended her goal-scoring streak to six games after netting her 14th goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Bailey Feeney dished out her fifth assist on Petford's opening goal of the contest.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone registered 26 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
  • Senior Mikayla Lantto and junior Jeannie Wallner scored their respective 17th and 13th goals of the season for LIU.
  • Junior netminder Tindra Holm picked up her 19th win of the season in net for the Sharks after stopping 27 of her 28 shots faced in goal.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill wasted little jumping out to an early one-goal lead after Petford sent a shot from the neutral zone past Holm in net to get the scoring started less than three minutes into the game.
  • However, just over a minute after the Skyhawks opened the scoring, LIU would respond as Lantto netted her team-leading 17th goal of the season.
  • Stone and Holm were locked in a goalie duel during the second period as both sides would go back and forth trading shots. However, both netminders would combine to stop all 23 combined shots during the middle frame to play to a 1-1 tie heading into the second intermission.
  • With 7:40 left in regulation, the Sharks forecheck came through as Wallner capitalized on a loose puck in the crease to give LIU a late third-period lead at 2-1.
  • Despite the late effort to mount a comeback, pulling the goaltender to take the on-ice skater advantage, the Skyhawks would be unable to net the equalizer as the Sharks took the series finale 2-1 over Stonehill.
