BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (December 1, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team snapped its five-game skid, taking down NEWHA opponent Franklin Pierce, 4-1, on Friday night. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 8-11 overall and 8-5 in conference play, while the Ravens dip to 5-9 overall and 5-7 against conference opponents on the season.

Highlights

  • Sophomore forward Lily Geist scored a pair of goals for the fifth time of her career to lead the Skyhawks offensively.
  • Sophomore Maddison Achtyl netted her team-leading seventh goal, while sophomore Bailey Feeney found the back of the net for the second time this season.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone earned her second win of the season in between the pipes after stopping 30 of her 31 shots faced on the night.
  • First-year forward Lauren Maras scored her first collegiate goal for the Ravens.
  • Junior goaltender Gwen Bowler recorded 17 saves in goal for Franklin Pierce.

How it Happened

  • After a back-and-forth start to the opening frame, Stonehill lit the lamp with the game's opening score at 18:45 into the first, after Geist received a slot pass from Achtyl behind the Ravens net.
  • The Skyhawks would hold onto their slight one-goal advantage until late in the second period, when Maras found the back of the cage for her first career goal, tying the game up at one apiece heading into the third.
  • Following the equalizer in the middle frame from Franklin Pierce, Stonehill looked to come out of the break strong and break the 1-1 tie during the final 20 minutes of regulation.
  • However, the Ravens would hold the Skyhawks off the board until late, as with less than three minutes remaining, Achtyl netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season after rifling a shot over Bowler's shoulder.
  • Achtyl's goal would prove to be the game-winner as Stonehill held onto possession over the contest's final minutes.
  • Feeney and Geist capped off the scoring and sealed the 4-1 victory in favor of the Skyhawks after netting empty-net goals throughout the final minute of the conference matchup.

  • Achtyl is now tied with Whaley for the team-lead at two game winning goals on the year.
  • The Skyhawks top-five nationally ranked penalty kill unit stood tall, going a perfect 4-for-4 shorthanded.
