Women's Hockey Falls to Maine, 7-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 7, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team fell at home to the University of Maine, 7-1, in the second game of a two-game weekend series Saturday afternoon.

Highlights

  • Graduate student Ida Kuoppala recorded her first career hat trick, scoring three goals and dishing out an assist for the Black Bears.
  • Postgrad forward Ann-Frederique Guay added a pair of goals for Maine, while senior Rahel Enzler and first-year student Haley Ryan found the back of the net for the first time this season.
  • First-year netminder Julia Bachetti earned her first collegiate win in net after registering 14 saves for the Black Bears.
  • Senior defender Grace Parker recorded her first career goal on the power play off assists from both sophomore Alexis Petford and senior Paige Whaley.
  • Junior goaltender Hanna Zukow tallied a season-high 42 saves in goal for the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • After Maine opened the scoring at the 3:38 mark of the opening period, Zukow and the Skyhawks defense would settle in, stopping 10 shots over the next 15 minutes of action.
  • The Black Bears regained their early momentum, scoring two goals over the final minutes of the first off the sticks of Ryan and Kuoppala to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • Coming out of the break, both sides would go back and forth until the 8:40 mark of the second, where sophomore trio of Kathryn Karo, Sarah Taylar, and Lily Barrett peppered the Black Bears goaltender with a combined five shots on goal in less than 30 seconds. However, the Skyhawks were unable to break through.
  • After drawing a penalty at the 19:47 mark of the second, Stonehill would start the third on the power play.
  • The Skyhawks wouldn't waste any time in the third, scoring their first goal of the season on the power play 25 seconds into the final frame of regulation after a wrist shot from Parker found its way into the back of the net.
  • Despite cutting the deficit to 3-1, Maine regained its momentum once again from the first, outshooting Stonehill 26-3 in the third and taking home the 7-1 victory.

  • Maine now leads the all-time series over Stonehill 2-0.
  • The Skyhawks won the faceoff battle over the Black Bears 36-28.
  • Zukow registered a season-high of 42 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
