SHELTON, Conn. (January 5, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team opened the new year in style, skating to a 3-0 shutout victory over NEWHA opponent Post Friday afternoon. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 9-12 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while the Eagles dip to 4-17 overall and 4-11 against conference opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Bailey Feeney recorded her first collegiate two-goal game, while sophomore Sydney Russell netted her first goal of the season and second of her career.
  • Sophomore defender Lily Barrett dished out a pair of assists, while sophomore Brianna Walkom registered her fourth assist of the season.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone secured her second shutout of the season after stopping all 18 shots faced in between the pipes.
  • Senior netminder Grace Glasrud made 46 saves in net for the Eagles.

How it Happened

  • After a back-and-forth start to the contest, Feeney chipped herself a pass off the boards into the offensive zone and sent a wrist shot over the left shoulder of the Post netminder to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame.
  • With just over five minutes left in the first, Barrett would connect with Feeney again, doubling the Skyhawks lead with a redirect goal into the back of the cage.
  • Despite outshooting Post 15-4 in the second, Stonehill could not break through and extend its advantage on the scoreboard, as they would take a 2-0 lead into the final frame.
  • A penalty-filled third period saw the two teams each have three power plays; however, the penalty-kill units on either side would hold each other off the board.
  • In the final minutes of regulation, the Skyhawks would take their final penalty and go down two skaters, as the Eagles would pull the goalie down two goals late in the contest.
  • Stone and the Skyhawks' defense would stand tall despite being down a pair, killing off the penalty and sealing the victory with a full-length empty-net goal off Russell's stick.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill outshot Post 49-18, while Post edged out the Skyhawks in the faceoff circle 29-26.
  • Feeney's two-goal outing marked the second consecutive game a Skyhawk has tallied a pair of goals, dating back to sophomore Maeve Carey's against Franklin Pierce on December 2nd.
