FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 10, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team shut out Sacred Heart University in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) matchup on Friday afternoon, 1-0.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Lily Geist scored the lone goal of the game, marking her second of the season for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone stopped all 20 of her shots faced between the pipes for Stonehill to preserve the shutout victory in net.
  • Sophomore Olivia Laroche led Sacred Heart's offense with three shots on goal.
  • Sophomore netminder Jillian Petruno got the start in net and stopped 18 of her 19 shots faced for the Pioneers. Today marked Petruno's third game straight allowing just one goal.

How it Happened

  • After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes of the conference matchup, Stonehill would open the scoring at the 10:11 mark of the first period after Geist redirected a shot off the point from Barrett into the back of the net.

  • With less than four minutes left in the opening frame, Stone stood tall in net for the Skyhawks, stopping a SHU 2-on-1 opportunity to keep the Pioneers off the board in the first.
  • Stone continued her solid play in net throughout the second period, stopping multiple grade-A scoring chances and preserving a one-goal lead for the Skyhawks in between the pipes.
  • Throughout the third period, both sides would go back and forth through the neutral zone, not allowing any prime scoring chances.
  • However, midway through the frame, the Skyhawks' top-five nationally ranked penalty kill unit would be called into action, where they would stifle the Pioneer's power play attack to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory.

Noteworthy

  • With the win, Stonehill extends its program record winning streak to six games.
  • Stone secured her second career shutout against the Pioneers.
  • The Skyhawks set a program record after earning their third shutout of the season.
  • Sophomore Lily Barrett and junior Josie Mendeszoon dished out their respective second and third assists of the season.
