Women's Hockey Falls to Franklin Pierce, 6-3, in Weekend Finale

WINCHENDON, Mass. (December 2, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team dropped its weekend finale at Franklin Pierce, 6-3, on Saturday. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 8-12 overall and 8-6 in conference play, while the Ravens improve to 6-9 overall and 6-7 against NEWHA opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore defender Maeve Carey scored two goals on the night for the first time of her collegiate career.
  • Senior captain Paige Whaley lit the lamp for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone recorded 19 saves in between the pipes for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Emilie Prive led the Ravens offense with four points on the night off a goal and trio of assists, while first-year forward Lauren Maras recorded her first career two goal game.
  • Sophomore goaltender Jill Hertl picked up her fourth win of the season in net after stopping 34 of her 37 shots faced for Franklin Pierce.

How it Happened

  • The top-five nationally ranked penalty kill unit for the Skyhawks would be called into action early, where they would successfully kill off the two-minute minor within the opening seconds of the contest.
  • However, less than three minutes into the game, Franklin Pierce would light the lamp after a deflection in front of the net by senior Delaney Bonifacio found its way into the back of the net.
  • With 4:57 remaining in the first, Mertens would score her second goal of the season on the breakaway to give the Ravens a 2-0 advantage.
  • Franklin Pierce tacked one more on the board in the opening frame after a shot off the goal line by Prive found the back of the cage on the power play.
  • Sophomore Gracie Sacca nearly cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 15:54 mark of the middle period with a shorthanded breakaway opportunity. However, the Franklin Pierce netminder would stop the scoring chance and keep Stonehill off the board.
  • At the 12:10 point of the second, Carey skated into the slot after a faceoff win by junior Josie Mendeszoon, where she rocketed a wrist shot over the glove of Hertl and into the back of the net to get the Skyhawks on the board.
  • Two bounces over the head of Stone throughout the remainder of the middle frame resulted in a pair of goals for the Ravens, who would take a commanding 5-1 lead into the third.
  • Despite outscoring Franklin Pierce 2-1 in the final frame of regulation, the Ravens' lead grew too much for the Skyhawks to overcome, eventually falling by a final score of 6-3.

Noteworthy

  • Sophomore defender Sydney Russell led the Skyhawks with single-game career high mark of seven shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Bailey Feeney, Sacca, and Mendeszoon each dished out assists on the night for Stonehill.
  • Whaley now leads the team in goals with seven on the season.
  • Stonehill outshot (37-25) and won the faceoff battle (35-26) against Franklin Pierce.
