Women's Hockey Rolls Past Saint Michael's, 6-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 3, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team extended its winning streak to four games after defeating Saint Michael's, 6-1, on Friday night. With the win, the Skyhawks move to 5-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while the Purple Knights fall to 0-7 overall and 0-5 against conference opponents.

  • Sophomore Alexis Petford had a stellar offensive game, registering four points on the night after scoring two goals and dishing out a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore Maddison Achtyl and senior Paige Whaley scored their fourth and sixth goals of the season, respectively.
  • Junior Josie Mendeszoon notched a single-season career high after netting her second goal of the season against St. Michael's, while first-year student Makenna Slocum scored her first career goal for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore Hannah Squires made her collegiate debut in net and posted her first career win after stopping 12 of her 13 shots faced.
  • First-year defender Maddie Quinn scored the lone goal for the Purple Knights off sophomore Elisabeth Gerebi's first assist of the season.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill opened the games scoring at the 11:26 mark of the first period where Achtyl would net her fourth goal of the season on a cross-crease pass from sophomore Bailey Feeney.

  • However, Saint Michael's would respond with a late goal coming at the 17:40 mark of the opening period as Quinn scored her first career goal to tie the game up at one apiece heading into the first intermission.
  • After back-and-forth play opened the middle frame, Petford broke open the Stonehill offense, tallying two-goals in a four-minute span to give the Skyhawks a 3-1 advantage heading into the third period.
  • Less than two minutes into the final frame of regulation, Whaley and Mendeszoon would tack two goals on the board before Slocum capped off the scoring at the 16:58 mark of the third to seal the 6-1 victory for the Skyhawks.

Noteworthy

  • Feeney dished out her first two assists of the season.
  • Whaley has now scored five goals over her last four games as she leads the team with six goals on the season.  
  • The Skyhawks dominated the faceoff battle, going 45-18 against the Greyhounds, as sophomore Brianna Walkom went 13-4 herself.
