BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 4, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team extended its winning streak to five games after sneaking past NEWHA opponent Saint Michael's, 6-5, in overtime on Saturday. With the win, the Skyhawks move to 6-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while the Purple Knights fall to 0-8 overall and 0-6 against conference opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Maddison Achtyl had a career outing, registering her first collegiate four-point game after scoring a pair of goals – including the game winner in overtime – and dishing out two assists.
  • Junior Josie Mendeszoon recorded her first career multi-point game after extending her single-season career high with her third goal of the season and dishing out an assist against St. Michael's.

  • Sophomore trio of Kathryn Karo, Lily Geist, and Lucie Turcotte added goals of their own on the afternoon for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore Hannah Squires earned her second career win in as many games in net for Stonehill. Squires stopped a career-high 13 shots against the Purple Knights.
  • First-year pairing of Alizee LeBlanc and Naomi Tink each scored their first career goals for Saint Michael's, while senior captain Mary Leys found the back of the net for the first time this season.
  • Sophomore netminder Annika Lavender got the start in net and stopped 37 of her 43 shots faced for the Purple Knights.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill came out of the gates strong as Geist got the scoring started at the 4:12 mark of the first period after receiving an up-ice pass from Achtyl and capitalizing on a partial breakaway.
  • Saint Michael's would respond, however, just over 11 minutes into the contest as Leys scored her first goal unassisted, tying the game up at 1-1.
  • The second period would go back and forth, with both sides trading goals. Achtyl scored her first of two on the afternoon at the 1:16 mark before LeBlanc scored her first career goal for the Purple Knights on the power play.
  • Mendeszoon followed LeBlanc with a goal of her own off an assist from Achtyl at the 13:28 mark of the middle period. Saint Michael's answered less than five minutes later as Tink lit the lamp to cut the lead to 3-2 in favor of the Skyhawks.

  • Stonehill closed out the second period strong, scoring a pair of goals in the final 70 seconds off the sticks of Turcotte and Karo.
  • Despite taking a two-goal lead into the third period, the Purple Knights would battle their way back and tie the game up at five apiece at the end of regulation to force overtime.
  • Squires and the Stonehill defense came up clutch in the early minutes of the five-minute overtime period, blocking two shots within the first minute. The defensive effort was rewarded, as sophomore Gracie Sacca and Achtyl raced up the ice and connected for the shorthanded game-winner.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill's second line of Achtyl, Geist, and Mendeszoon led the way for the Skyhawks, registering a total of seven points (4 G, 3 A) on the afternoon.
  • Senior captain Grace Parker, sophomore duo Lily Barrett and Sydney Russell as well as freshman Peyton Wise each recorded assists on the night.
  • The Skyhawks dominated the faceoff battle, going 38-17 against the Purple Knights, as Karo paved the way with a 10-2 record inside the circle for Stonehill.
