BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (February 16, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team skated to a thrilling, 4-1, victory over Saint Anselm College Friday night inside the Bridgewater Ice Arena. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 16-15-2 overall and 16-9-2 in conference play, while the Hawks drop to 18-13-1 overall and 18-8-1 against NEWHA opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Kathryn Karo led the Skyhawks offensively, recording her second career two-goal game and first of the season.
  • Sophomore Maddison Achtyl scored her 12th goal of the season, while first-year forward Peyton Wise scored her fourth of the year.
  • Junior Josie Mendeszoon, sophomore trio Alexis Petford, Lily Geist, and Lucie Turcotte as well as freshman Pusle Dyring-Andersen registered assists for Stonehill.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone picked up her 10th win of the season in net after stopping 26 of her 27 shots faced.
  • Freshman Hailey Tullo netted her third goal of the season for the Hawks.
  • First-year netminder Courtney Stagman tallied 27 saves in between the pipes for Saint Anselm.

How it Happened

  • Saint Anselm wasted little time opening the scoring as Tullo lit the lamp off a rebounded shot off the stick of senior Natalie Tulchinsky in front just five minutes into the contest.
  • Despite outshooting the Hawks 14-9 over the first 20 minutes of action, the Skyhawks could not crack the scoresheet in the first, heading into the break trailing 1-0.
  • Stonehill would tie the game up five minutes into the second period after Achtyl stuffed the puck over the goal line from just outside the crease, lighting the lamp and tying the game up at one apiece.
  • Less than 30 seconds later, the conference leader in scoring, Tulchinsky would race down the ice on a breakaway. However, Stone would stand tall in net, stifling the grade-A scoring chance and keeping the game knotted at 1-1.
  • The Skyhawks would reward their netminder's valiant effort, gaining their first lead of the game at the 15:27 mark of the second after Karo wrapped around behind the goal before rifling a shot over the shoulder of Stagman for her first goal of the game.

  • Taking a slight one-goal advantage into the second intermission, Stonehill would look to extend its lead in the third and gain a sense of breathing room.
  • Karo would answer that call for the Skyhawks, capitalizing on a rebound off a blue-line shot from Dyring-Andersen and sending a backhanded shot into the back of the cage to extend the Stonehill lead to 3-1.
  • In the waning minutes of the third, with the Saint Anselm goal emptied, Wise would send a shot from the opposite goal line into the empty net on the opposing end to cap off the scoring and seal the 4-1 victory for the Skyhawks.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill outshot Saint Anselm (31-27) and won the faceoff battle over the Hawks (30-26).
  • Leading the way at the dot for the Skyhawks was senior captain Paige Whaley who won 75 (9-of-12) percent of her faceoffs.
