Women's Hockey Comes Up Short at Lindenwood, 4-2

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (November 24, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team came up short in its Thanksgiving weekend series opener at Lindenwood, 4-2, Friday night. With the decision, the Skyhawks dip to 7-10 overall, while the Lions improve to 6-8-1 on the season.

Highlights

  • Junior Josie Mendeszoon and sophomore Alexis Petford each scored their fifth goals of the season.
  • Sophomore goaltender Eve Stone tallied 28 saves in between the pipes for the Skyhawks.
  • Junior Morgan Neitke and graduate student Rachel Goff led the Lions with two and three points on the night, respectively.
  • Senior Natalie Ferenc picked up the win in net after stopping 26 of her 28 shots faced.

How it Happened

  • Lindenwood jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard after Goff scored her third goal of the season just 3:27 into the contest.
  • Stonehill would remain resilient throughout the remaining minutes of the first, as Mendeszoon capitalized on a loose puck in front of the Lions net for the equalizer at the 15:39 mark of the first.
  • After an even opening 15 minutes of the second period, Lindenwood would regain its one goal lead after Grabianowski scored a power play goal with just under five minutes left in the frame.
  • Sophomore Gracie Sacca nearly tied the game up once again, less than 30 seconds after the Lions found the back of net, after glancing a shot off the crossbar.
  • However, Lindenwood would tack a shorthanded breakaway goal on the board off the stick of Neitzke to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Skyhawks would respond in the final minute of the second as Petford scored her fifth of the season on a breakaway, cutting the deficit to 3-2 heading into the break.
  • Despite the late effort in the third to find the equalizer, Stonehill would come up short eventually falling to the Lions by a final score of 4-2.
