Women's Ice Hockey Comes Up Short in Season Opener at RPI

TROY, N.Y. (September 29, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team came up short in its season opener in Troy, N.Y., on Friday night against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 1-0.

The Details

  • Sophomore Maddison Achtyl nearly scored the game and season opening goal just 44 seconds into the contest on breakaway opportunity that would be stopped by the Engineer netminder Amanda Rampado.
  • After the opening scoring opportunity for the Skyhawks, both sides would go back-and-forth on the ice, playing to a scoreless game until the 13:51 mark of the opening period where Nina Christof lit the lamp for the games lone goal.
  • Christof scored her first goal of the season after finding the puck off the end board in Stonehill's defensive zone after a shot went wide of the net by Audrey McCutcheon.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hanna Zukow and the Skyhawks defense would keep RPI off the board throughout the remainder of the opening frame, facing seven shots on goal over the final six minutes of the period.
  • In the second period on the power play, Stonehill's team leader in scoring a season ago sophomore Alexis Petford glanced a shot off the pipe at the 5:56 mark, nearly knotting the game up at one apiece.
  • Despite outshooting the Engineers 8-6 in the middle frame, the Skyhawks would head into the third period trailing by one.

  • RPI would control possession most of the third and hold off the Skyhawks offensive pressure over the final 20 minutes to secure the slight 1-0 victory.
