Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Molloy College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C (February 25, 2022)- On day two of action at The Ripken Experience, the Stonehill College baseball team took on Molloy College in a doubleheader that saw the Lions come away with wins in both games, 16-0 in game one and 7-6 in game two.

Key Moments:

  • Molloy wasted no time as Garrett Scavelli led things off with a quick homer to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
  • Throughout the first five innings, Molloy was up 9-0 after putting up five runs in the fifth that featured two doubles from Jake McCarthy and Chris Einemann. Eventually, in the eighth inning, that is when the Lions put the game away for good when they dropped six runs on Stonehill in the eighth inning.
  • Ciulla-Hall and Taylor tried their best to keep their squad in the game by getting on base, but nothing ever came of it due to the strong performance by Lions pitcher Charlie Cucchiara. Ciulla-Hall finished the day with both a double and single. Meanwhile, Taylor hit for two singles but like Ciulla-Hall, no one was able to move Taylor around the basepath after his two hits.
  • Jonathan Rice drew the start for Stonehill and went 4.1 innings, gave up five hits, six runs (all earned), and fanned five Lions batters on the afternoon.

Pitcher Records:

Win: Molloy, Charlie Cucchiara (1-0)

Loss: Stonehill, Jonathan Rice (0-1)

Game 2: Stonehill 6, Molloy 7

Standout Performers:

Key Moments:

  • Molloy continued their offensive momentum from the first game after going up 4-0 after two innings that saw two doubles, Thomas Brady and Matt Overton.
  • However, Stonehill ended up responding in the bottom of the second when the Skyhawks poured on four runs to tie things up. Trey Ciulla-Hall started things off with a single for the Skyhawks and was ultimately driven in by Kiely who ripped an RBI double that also scored Jack Marshall who reached from a single during the previous at-bat.
  • Lucier drove in the tying run after he also hit an RBI double of his own that scored Farragher who hit an RBI double prior.
  • The Lions quickly retook the lead after a Matt Overton home run in the top half of the third but like the inning prior, the purple and white tied the game up again at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth when Lidsky hit a homer of his own.
  • Despite tying things back up heading into the sixth, the Lions retook the lead for good when Matt Yip hit a two-run shot that gave Molloy a 7-5 lead. Although, Stonehill almost bounced back again like they did all game when Mike Swanhol reached on a fielding error by Molloy's third basemen which allowed Kiely to score who drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth (7-6).
  • In his collegiate debut, Stonehill starter Peter Haas went six innings, gave up eight hits, five earned runs, while also fanning six Molloy batters.

Pitcher Records:

Win: Molloy, AJ Verga (1-0)

Loss: Stonehill, Peter Haas (0-1)
