WORCESTER, Mass. (March 1, 2022)- Despite two late goals from both Mike Seoane and Charles Page, it was not enough as the seven-seeded Stonehill College men's hockey team fell to three-seeded Assumption University, 5-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals Tuesday evening at the Worcester Ice Arena.

How it Happened

  • The first period was a defensive battle that saw Assumption double up Stonehill in shots (14-7) but despite taking more shots, the Greyhounds never found the back of the net in the period. Skyhawks goalie, John Day kept Stonehill in it during the opening frame making 14 of his 27 saves.
  • As the second period got underway, Stonehill had a chance early (18:50) to break the 0-0 tie when Page drew a penalty shot opportunity and tried to beat Assumption goalie, David Altman stick side, but he was able to stretch out his leg pad to make the stop.
  • Assumption ended up breaking the 0-0 draw first when Robert Holyoke scored on the powerplay for the Greyhounds with just 15:50 left in the second.
  • Stonehill received a golden opportunity midway through the first period as they generated a five-minute powerplay (15:34) and a two-minute minor penalty shortly after the five minutes (10:31). Stonehill peppered Altman with eight shots but just could not sneak the puck past Altman.
  • The Greyhounds extended their lead shortly after Stonehill's second powerplay expired as Christopher Stalmok sent his shot past Day and made it 2-0 (8:13).
  • For the rest of the second period, Assumption went on to add two more goals from Dara Conneely and Dante Maribito at 5:39 and 15 seconds respectively.
  • The Skyhawks ended up breaking the shutout nearly midway through the frame (10:35) when Seoane snuck the puck past Altman and made it 4-1.
  • For the next seven minutes Stonehill kept trying for that second goal and they were able to with just 3:07 left. After Joshua Loveridge swung the puck up to Page who was near the middle of both face-off circles, Page ripped a slapshot past Altman and made it 4-2.
  • Day ended up being pulled from the net for an extra skater for the Skyhawks however, the Greyhounds capitalized on the empty net to ultimately preserve a win making it 5-2.
