The Details:

  • Stonehill had a chance early in the period as they secured a power-play opportunity just three minutes in and got two shots off from Jake Cady and Joshua Loveridge but were turned away from Hawks netminder, Nick Howard, as he ended the night with 24, saves overall.
  • However, at the 9:12 mark, Saint Anselm got on the board first after Jac Cordeiro created a turnover on the Stonehill side near the top of the right face-off circle. From there, he sent a wrister that beat Skyhawks goalie John Day's left side for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Just a little four minutes later (13:22), the Hawks doubled their lead as Mark Blaney's shot that found the net through a crowd near the front left point, after Chase Reynolds swung the puck to him on a face-off.
  • Despite being down 2-0, Stonehill responded scoring three unanswered goals between the end of the first period and throughout the second. After creating their second power-play chance in the period, the Skyhawks made sure to capitalize. Drew Gardner kept the puck in the attacking end after receiving a great look from Cady. Once he corraled the puck, he sent a hard wrist shot that found twine through traffic at 14:55 of the opening period on the power play. This marked Gardner's first goal of his collegiate career.
  • The Skyhawks carried their momentum into the second period as the squad evened things at two early (01:39) when John Peloso sent a shot on Howard and the puck trickled past him into the goal.
  • After both sides continued to play hard throughout the second, Stonehill ended up taking a 3-2 lead (13:03) when Max Pineo snuck behind the Hawks defense and snapped a shot from the left faceoff circle, beating Howard.
  • Saint Anslem responded right away (14:28) and tied the contest up at three when Hunter Brackett forced a turnover at the left hash mark and placed a quick shot past Day's left side.
  • As the second period was wrapping up, the Skyhawks retook the lead when Brendan Nehmer peppered Howard with three straight shots and it was the third one where he capitalized to make it 4-3 heading into the third.
  • Midway through the third the Hawks tied the contest at four when Mark Leach scored a power-play goal of his own for Saint Anslem when Tommy Schwartz found Leach near the top of the blue line. Stonehill had a key chance to retake the lead in the third when they drew a later power-play 17:37 into the third. The Skyhawks sent four shots on the net but were turned away each time by Howard as both teams headed into overtime.
  • In the overtime period, Stonehill managed to generate three shots but just could not sneak another past Howard. Day also had a strong overtime as he stopped three Saint Anselm shots to preserve the tie. On the night, Day 41 saves. It is the second time this season Day has recorded 40 or more saves with his other 40 save game (44) coming against the Hawks on November 12.
