NE10 FIRST ROUND: Seoane's Overtime Goal Sends Stonehill Past Saint Anselm, 5-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 26, 2022)-In a game that saw three lead changes and two ties, it was the Stonehill College Skyhawks who prevailed in an overtime thrilling first-round Northeast-10 Conference Playoff matchup against Saint Anselm by a score of 5-4 Saturday evening at the Sullivan Arena. 

The Details:

  • Saint Anselm struck first twice at the 13-minute mark (13:34) and ten-minute mark (10:12) courtesy of Will Christensen and Tommy Schwartz for an early 2-0 Hawks lead. 
  • However, as the period wound down, Tim Grable got Stonehill back into the contest with just a little over six minutes in the frame (6:16). Max Pineo swung the puck to Grable who was then able to send his shot past Saint Anselm goalie, Nick Howard to make it 2-1.
  • Not long after with 4:28 remaining in the period, the Hawks extended their lead back to two after Christensen scored his second goal of the night. But just as the first was starting to wind down (1:06), Kyle Heath brought the Skyhawks back within one (3-2). Heath had great passing to set him up for the goal from both Augustus Stevens and Grable. 
  • Stonehill continued their momentum at the start of the second period as the squad scored within under five minutes into the frame (16:52). The Skyhawks drew a power-play opportunity early on (18:20) and capitalized when Ryan King corralled the lead pass from Joshua Loveridge and was able to put the puck past Howard and evened things up (3-3). 
  • Throughout the second, Skyhawks goalie, John Day did a great job holding the Hawks scoreless for the entire second making nine of his 35 saves on the night. 
  • As the third period got underway (18:03), Saint Anselm quickly retook the lead when Trevor Hott snuck his shot through Day to make it 4-3 Hawks. 
  • Similar to throughout the game, Stonehill continued to fight peppering Howard with three shots before, on their fourth shot of the period, the contest was tied up again. With just a little under seven minutes remaining (6:57), Pineo sent a wrister past Howard. From there on out, Day and the Stonehill defense forced overtime.
  • Coming into overtime, Stonehill and Saint Anslem played three times prior, and two of the three contests ended in a tie however this time, that would not be the case. Skating up the ice was Charles Page and he dished the puck back to a trailing John Peloso who ripped a shot that clanked off the post. Luckily, Mike Seoane was right by the net and collected the rebound to shoot it past Howard's glove side for the game-winner (16:55).

Stonehill continues their playoff run traveling to Assumption University for the NE10 semi-finals on Tuesday, March 1 at a time to be determined later. Saint Anselm sees their season come to an end at 13-13-2 (10-7-2 NE10).
