Ice Hockey Rolls Past Southern Maine, 5-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 27, 2021) - Freshman goaltender Gavin FitzPatrick stopped 43 of the 44 shots on goal he faced as Stonehill College jumped out to a two goal lead after a period of play on its way to a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference men's ice hockey matchup at Bridgewater Ice Arena this evening.

The Details

  • FitzPatrick made 20 of his 43 saves in the third period alone as Southern Maine recorded 21 shots on goal in the frame in search of a spark to get back in the game. Freshman Mason Palmer finished with 22 saves in goal for the Huskies.
  • Senior captain Charles Page and junior John Peloso each tallied a goal and assist to lead the way for the Stonehill offense.
  • Freshman Jake Cady dished out two assists, while junior Brendan Nehmer and freshmen Nolan FitzPatrick and Kyle Heath each chipped in with goals.
  • Stonehill scored a pair of goals just 21-seconds apart midway through the opening period to grab a lead it would not relinquish. FitzPatrick opened the scoring with his second goal of the season 8:40 into the first, before Heath doubled the Skyhawks lead at 9:01 with his first collegiate goal.

    Nehmer's fourth goal of the season with just 55-seconds remaining was the only scoring of the second period, with Page and Peloso assisting on the tally.
  • Page extended the Stonehill lead to 4-0 with a power play goal 12:45 into the third and then Peloso stretched the advantage to 5-0 with an empty net goal with 4:31 to play.
  • Southern Maine spoiled Gavin FitzPatrick's shutout bid with 1:20 to play and just moments after a power play expired with a goal from freshman Mathieu Sabourin.
