Stonehill Falls To Southern New Hampshire in First Game of New Year, 6-2

HOOKSETT, N.H. (January 21, 2022)- In their first game since December 10, the Stonehill College men's ice hockey team traveled to Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) for a Northeast 10 (NE10) Conference matchup where the Skyhawks ultimately fell, 6-2 Friday evening at the Ice Den Arena.

John Day recorded 25 or more saves (27) for the seventh time this season (Phot Courtesy: Saylor Murphy).

How it Happened:

  • Despite strong play from both sides to start, the Skyhawks got the scoring started when Ryan King found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career. King initially sent a shot on the net that was turned away by Penmen goalie, JT Kossakowski. However, John Peloso corralled the loose puck and swung it over to Mike Seoane who then found King again to put the back past Kossakowski for the early 1-0 lead.
  • After the goal, Stonehill goaltender, John Day helped preserve the early lead when he and the Skyhawk defense helped stifle the SNHU powerplay toward the end of the period by allowing just one shot which Day turned away along with 10 other Penmen shots in the first.
  • The Penmen though remained on the powerplay to start the second period and were able to capitalize just 1:16 into the second period when Jake Cox evened things up at one after he received a pass from Matt Amante. Shortly after at 2:56, SNHU was on another powerplay and Cole Stewart netted the eventual game-winner as he collected a pass from Cox to give the Penmen a 2-1 advantage.
  • After SNHU made it 4-1 later in the second period off the sticks of Andy Somerville (9:18) and Joseph Fiorino (11:49), Stonehill generated a powerplay opportunity with a little under five minutes in the period (4:17) that saw shots from Drew Gardner, King, Max Pineo, and Charles Page but just could not find the back of the net.
  • With 12:08 left in the third period, the Penmen added to their lead when Jack Grey gave SNHU a 5-1 lead.
  • Stonehill created yet another powerplay chance (6:45) and this time was able to capitalize on the skater advantage. Kyle Heath found the back of the net for the third time this season courtesy of assists by Jake Cady and Gardner to make cut the deficit to three (5-2). Shortly after though (4:36), George Thurston added one more goal which ultimately gave SNHU the 6-2 win.
  • For the evening, Day went on to make 27 saves which marked the seventh time this season he made 25 or more saves.
