NORFOLK, Va. (April 1, 2023)- The Stonehill College baseball team kicked off game two of three Saturday against Norfolk State where the Skyhawks ended up falling, 5-2 at Marty Miller Field.

Standout Performances

Key Moments

  • Stonehill started off the scoring again in the first inning. Today's first run was thanks to smart base running after a wild pitch from the Spartans that allowed Kiely to score.
  • Later in the contest, the Skyhawks tacked on another run when Flaherty drove a single through the left side and brought home Sam Parks after he drew a walk earlier in the inning.
  • For the first four innings, Matt Tyman kept the hosts at bay by not allowing one run despite Norfolk State registering eight hits. The hosts threatened in the fourth when they had runners at second and third with one out. However, Tyman got out of the jam after he induced a ground and flyout to keep the squad out in front.
  • In the fifth, Norfolk State cut the deficit to one when Raphael Rodriguez hit a sacrifice to right and made it a 2-1 ballgame. The Spartans ended up pulling ahead later in the seventh with a four-run inning to go up 5-2 highlighted by a Justin Journette three-run homer.
  • Despite being down three, Stonehill generated a rally when Mike Swanholm reached first after a Spartans error and Stonehill had runners on first and second after Flaherty singled to lead off the inning. After Chris Roberti was hit by a pitch, the Purple and White had the bases loaded with one out. Unfortunately, Norfolk State's pitching ended the rally by retiring the next two batters.
  • Stonehill would once again threaten in the ninth after Parks drew his third walk of the day but the Spartans pitching once again bailed out Norfolk State as the hosts held on for the 5-2 win.
