Stonehill Falls To Kansas State and Army In Saturday Doubleheader

MANHATTAN, Kan. (March 4, 2023)- The Stonehill College baseball team kicked off their weekend in Kansas with a doubleheader against Kansas State and Army. The Skyhawks dropped the first game against the hosts, 25-3, and then fell in the second game to the Black Knights, 26-3.

Key Moments

  • Stonehill jumped on the Wildcats early in the first when Marshall ripped a single up the middle that plated Conor Kiely who had doubled to right center that led off the contest.
  • Brendan Kelly got the nod for Stonehill and held Kansas State scoreless for the first two innings. With runners on first and second and two outs in the second, Kelly got out of the jam after he recorded his third strikeout. 
  • However, for the next three innings, the Wildcats exploded for 13 runs including a nine-run fourth highlighted by a two-run RBI double to left from Cole Johnson.
  • Later in the contest, Kansas State had their largest scoring inning on the day when they plated 11 runs to go up 22 (24-2). In the final inning, Flaherty got a run back after he hit a solo shot to right for his first collegiate home run. Despite the late homer, Trae Robinson retired the rest of Stonehill's lineup for the win.

Key Moments

  • Army started off quickly as the Black Knights scored in four straight innings which included back-to-back eight-run innings in the second and third. Kevin Dubrul highlighted the offense in the spurt with a two-run RBI double to left. 
  • The Black Knights tacked on six more runs between the fourth and fifth, however, late in the seventh, Stonehill grabbed three runs back. Zemotel drew a walk that scored Will Florio after he had walked earlier in the inning. In the next at-bat, Martin ripped a two-run RBI single to left that plated Sam Kidder and Florio. From there, Army got the final out for the Saturday victory.
