Baseball Falls Short In NEC Opener At Sacred Heart, 4-3

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (March 17, 2023)- The Stonehill College baseball team opened up Northeast Conference play as the squad traveled to Sacred Heart University but came up short, 4-3 Friday afternoon.

Key Moments

  • Both sides held each other in check early on as both squads combined for just two hits in the first two innings. However, in the bottom of the third, the Pioneers struck first courtesy of a two-run shot from Sam Morganelli and Sacred Heart continued its momentum in the next inning, where the hosts plated one more run from a Mark Smith sacrifice RBI.
  • Despite being down three, the Skyhawks rallied with a three-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run RBI double to left from Marshall. Ciulla-Hall got the initial scoring started when he ripped an RBI double to center which scored Kiely. 
  • After coming in for Zach Gleason in the fifth, Joe Castrichini kept the hosts at bay by just allowing one hit. Sacred Heart threatened in the eighth after it placed runners on first and second with one out. Matt Tyman came in after the second baserunner reached but despite allowing a walk to the next batter, the senior got out of the jam thanks to a strikeout and ground out.
  • However, the Pioneers ended up grabbing the win via a walk-off single from Justin Jordan.
