EASTON, Mass. (April 30, 2022)- In games two and three of their four-game Northeast-10 Conference series with Saint Anselm, the Stonehill College baseball team split the twinbill, 0-5, and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Game one: Stonehill 0, Saint Anselm 5

Standout Performances

Key Moments:

  • Neither side was able to generate any offense in game one as both sides were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings.
  • Stonehill starter, Jonathan Rice, was stellar in the first five innings as the senior did not allow a single hit until the sixth. Rice did not allow a baserunner throughout the first three innings. In the fourth, the Hawks threatened after Matt Collins drew a walk and made his way to third during the frame. However, Rice retired the next batter when he induced a flyout to end the inning.
  • The Skyhawks had multiple chances early on as the purple and white had at least two base runners on in the first two innings. Their best chance came at the top of the second when Roberti ripped a double down the left field line and then Mike Swanholm followed up with a single to move Roberti to third. Despite having runners on the corners with one out, Saint Anselm starter, Matthew Michael got out of the jam with two quick outs to keep the game scoreless.
  • However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks finally broke things open with a five-run sixth that featured a go-ahead RBI double from Brady Doran
  • Down to their last three outs, Stonehill tried to cut the deficit after Taylor Gaspar reached first after getting plunked by Michael. However, Michael retired the next two batters for the 5-0 win.

Pitching Records:

Win: Saint Anselm-Matthew Michael (5-1)

Loss: Stonehill-Jonathan Rice (1-4)

Game two: Stonehill 4, Saint Anselm 2

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • In game two, it was Stonehill who struck first as the squad plated two runs in the first inning. Kiely extended his hitting streak to 12 games when he led off with a single before stealing second which allowed him to score off a Lucier double to deep left-center. Lucier would cross the plate one batter later on a single to right-center field by Lidsky. Lidsky now has 44 RBIs on the year and currently ranks second in the NE10.
  • The Hawks threatened in the bottom half of the frame when they loaded the bases with one out, however, Stonehill starter, Brandon Kelly, retired the next two batters via strikeouts. Overall on the day, Kelly notched six strikeouts which tied the junior's career-high.
  • After Saint Anselm grabbed one run in the third, the Hawks tied things at two after Salvatore Pezzolla scored on a wild pitch.
  • Despite there being two outs in the sixth, the Skyhawks got some timely hitting as Dennis Folan notched a single before Gaspar came on as a pinch-runner and swiped second for his third stolen base of the season. After a Dyaln Zemotel drew a walk, Kiely ripped a double down the left-field line to bring home Gaspar.
  • Stonehill went on to add an insurance run in the seventh (4-2) when Ciulla-Hall sent a sacrifice fly to center which allowed Lidsky to score after he reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
  • Heading into the last of the seventh, the Hawks got the lead runner on but Matt Tyman forced a clutch double play for two quick outs. Although Saint Anselm's next batter reached first, Tyman secured the victory when he got the Hawks last batter to foul out to first.

Pitching Records:

Win: Stonehill- Matt Tyman (3-3)

Loss: Saint Anselm- Harry MacKinlay (0-1)
