Stonehill Downed By Saint Michael's In Doubleheader Finale, 5-2 and 12-10

EASTON, Mass. (April 3, 2022)- In Sunday's Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader finale against Saint Michael's College, the Stonehill College baseball team dropped the last two games of the four-game series by scores of 5-2 and 12-10 at Lou Gorman Field. 

Game one: Stonehill 2, Saint Michael's 5

Key Moments:

  • Early on, neither side could get the scoring starter as Stonehill starter, Zach Gleason kept the Purple Knights at bay collecting three of his seven strikeouts in the first three innings. In the top of the third, Saint Michael's threatened with runners on first and third, but Gleason shut down the rally after forcing a flyout to end the frame. 
  • Despite shutting down Saint Michael's early threats, the Purple Knights took the first lead with a two-run fourth that featured a Sebastian Oetterer RBI double that made it 2-0. 
  • Stonehill responded in the next inning during the bottom of the fifth when the Skyhawks posted a two-run inning of their own and tied the contest back at two. After Gaspar started off the inning with a single to center field followed by back-to-back walks from Noah Lucier and Matt Farragher. Following the walks, Lidsky sent a deep fly to right field on a sacrifice fly to drive in Gaspar. In the next at-bat, Marshall sent a single past second base that scored Lucier. 
  • Heading into the final inning, the Purple Knights opened things up with a three-run seventh (5-2) that had three different Saint Michael's student-athletes record an RBI including Terence Moynihan who drove in the go-ahead run. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Skyhawks threatened with three-straight singles with one out, however, Jarret Muzzy ended the threat when he induced a double-play to end the game.

Game two: Stonehill 10, Saint Michael's 12

Key Moments:

  • In the second game, it was Stonehill who struck first this time after Gaspar drove in Kiely who had singled earlier in the inning. 
  • After Saint Michael's responded in the second to tie the game at one, the Skyhawks utilized a three-run third inning that included a go-ahead RBI from Lidsky when he ripped a single to right that drove in Lucier who had walked to lead off the inning. 
  • Swanholm drew a walk that brought in Farragher for a two-run lead (3-1) but then Stonehill reached their largest lead on the afternoon (4-1) when Kidder hit a hard line past shortstop that allowed Lidsky to score. 
  • However, between the fourth and sixth innings, the Purple Knights scored four straight runs to reclaim the lead (5-4) which featured an RBI from Andrew Lanthier.
  • As the game continued to go back and forth, Stonehill took the lead back again in a three-run sixth (7-5) when Gaspar notched his second RBI of the day that gave the Skyhawks a 6-5 advantage. During the next at-bat, Marshall drove in the seventh run for Stonehill on a fielder's choice. 
  • During the eighth inning, Saint Michael's utilized their second three-run inning to pull back ahead, 8-7 when Evan Balian hit an RBI to left-field. 
  • For the second time in the game, Stonehill tied the Purple Knights at eight after Marshall collected his second RBI on the afternoon that scored Lidsky after he singled to lead off the frame. 
  • Similar to last game, Saint Michael's pulled ahead in the final inning when they plated four runs (12-8) that featured an RBI double by Ulysses Luciano
  • The Skyhawks did make things interesting in the bottom of the ninth when they cut the deficit to two (12-10) after Lidsky scored Kiely. However, Colby Fane-Cushing shut down Stonehill's momentum with a strikeout for the doubleheader win.
