Stonehill Wraps Up Florida Trip With Split Against Caldwell

LAKE WORTH, Fla. (March 13, 2022)- The Stonehill College baseball team finished their Florida trip with a split against Caldwell University dropping the first game, 9-6, and then ending on a high note with a 14-2 victory. 

Game 1: Stonehill 6, Caldwell 9

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Caldwell struck early in the first to go up 2-0 after RBIs from both Kyle Richards and Santo Anzalone.
  • However, Stonehill responded in the second and evened things up at two. Taylor Gaspar ripped an RBI double to get the first run across scoring Roberti. In the next at-bat, Noah Lucier hit a deep sacrifice fly to left which scored Ryan Douglas after he reached on an error earlier in the inning. 
  • Stonehill continued their momentum in the third when Roberti hit a single to right that was misplayed by the Cougar's right fielder which allowed Marshall and Trey Ciulla-Hall to both score (4-2) taking advantage of the error. 
  • The Skyhawks tacked on two more runs in the fourth (6-2) after Lidksy hit a single to bring home Matt Farragher who had reached from a fielding error by the first basemen. After Lidsky was able to make his way to third from a balk and past ball, Marshall hit a double to allow Lidsky to cross home plate. 
  • Despite the large lead, Caldwell utilized a five-run fifth (7-6) to reclaim the advantage late. After the Cougars cut the score to 6-5, Frank Lehmann hit a two-run RBI single for the 7-6 lead. 
  • In the following inning, the Cougars added two more runs when Liam James hit a two-run RBI and pushed the lead to three (9-6).

Win: Caldwell-Brian Mackey (1-0)

Loss: Stonehill-Matt Tyman (1-2)

Game 2: Stonehill 14, Caldwell 2

Key Moments:

  • After Caldwell went up 1-0 after the top of the second, Ciulla-Hall grabbed the lead back for Stonehill (2-1) after he hit a two-run RBI single that scored both Lidsky and Lucier. 
  • The Cougars ended up tying the game again (2-2) courtesy of an RBI from Zach Saunders
  • Despite being tied, the Stonehill offense exploded for 12 runs in the next three innings (three in the fourth, five in the fifth, and four in the sixth). In the fourth, Ciulla-Hall ripped a two-run RBI double that scored both Farragher and Lucier (5-2). 
  • In the fifth, the Skyhawks offensive outburst was led by Lidksy who hit a two-run home run that pushed the advantage to eight (10-2). Finally in the sixth, the purple and white belted another two-run home run but this time off the bat of Farragher (14-2). 
  • On the mound for Stonehill, Matt Smith made the start and went four innings and gave up just two runs along with four hits and struck out four. However, it was Max Brulport who earned his first collegiate win by shutting down the Cougars the rest of the way going three innings, gave up one hit, but did not allow a run while also fanning two.
