Men's Tennis Earns First NEC Tournament Win Over Wagner and Advances to Quarterfinal Round

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (April 12, 2024) – Eighth-seeded Stonehill College made its first-ever appearance in the Northeast Conference Championship tournament against ninth-seeded Wagner College and secured a narrow 4-3 triumph over the Seahawks at the Mercer County Tennis Center Friday morning. 

How It Happened

  • The Skyhawks match against the Seahawks marked their first-ever participation in the NEC Championship Tournament during Stonehill's NCAA Division I era.
  • The Skyhawks' victory was spearheaded by the impressive performances of freshman Jacob Borch-Nielsen and sophomore Mark Kröll, who emerged as double winners.  
  • Borch-Nielsen and team-leading doubles partner, junior Jacob Wilhelm Kreftingcombined to take down freshman Filippo Tonnicchi and junior Jordan Hunte, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Kröll and sophomore classmate Donovan Rodrigues secured the doubles point for Stonehill with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position over senior Rodrigo Perez and sophomore Sebastian Dobson.  
  • Borch-Nielsen secured his double win on the day by defeating Tonnicchi at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3. 
  • The Seahawks responded, winning the next three singles matches to take a 3-2 overall match lead against the Skyhawks. 
  • Perez and Hunte earned singles triumphs over sophomore Mateo Mallen and freshman Armaan Mullick, while senior Aryan Gupta earned a point for Wagner by retirement at No. 3 singles. 
  • Following the Seahawks' three-straight singles victories, Kröll would cap off his double win against senior Lucas Darling, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 slot.

  • Senior Louis Coppi staged a remarkable comeback against Dobson. He dropped the first set 7-5 and fell behind early in the second, 3-2. However, he battled back, winning the flight at No. 5 singles, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. 
  • Coppi's comeback effort against Dobson also clinched the Skyhawks' first-ever NEC Tournament win over Wagner by a score of 4-3.
