Baseball Opens Up Series Vs. Maryland Eastern Shore With 7-6 Win

EASTON, Mass. (May 12, 2023)- The Stonehill College baseball team opened its three-game series versus the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a 7-6 win Friday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

 Key Moments

  • Leading off in the first for the Skyhawks, Kiely launched a home run to right field and gave the squad an early 1-0 advantage. For Kiely, Friday's homer marked not only the first of the season, but the first in his Skyhawk career.
  • The Purple and White struck again an inning later in the bottom of the second when Gaspar ripped an RBI single up the middle that allowed Ryan Douglas to score after he drew a walk that led off the frame.
  • University of Maryland Eastern Shore threatened in the top of the fifth after the Hawks had runners on first and second with no outs. However, Stonehill starter Pierce Friedman escaped the jam and retired the next three batters and preserved the shutout through five.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Purple and White utilized their largest scorining inning of the afternoon when the squad plated four-runs to go up 6-0. Chris Roberti started the scoring off in the inning when he had an RBI single find an opening in center field which brought home Lidsky after he doubled to lead off the inning. Later in the frame, Sam Parks drove in the team's sixth run courtest of an RBI single to right center that allowed Gaspar to score.
  • Stonehill tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Douglas drove a sacrifice fly to deep center that allowed Lidsky to cross home plate after he hit his second double of the day earlier.
  • The Hawks finally broke Stonehill's shutout when the visitoris scored four times in the eigith highlighted by Ryan Howe's two-run RBI single that found a gap on the left side and made it 7-4 going into the ninth.
  • In the final inning, University of Maryland Eastern Shore tacked on two more runs after a Dillon Oxyer RBI single and Luke Myers capitalzied on a wild pitch which made it 7-6. Later in the inning the Hawks loaded the bases with just two outs but Christian Loescher induced the clutch flyout to left that sealed the series-opening victory. Loescher's save marked the first of his collegiate career.
