Stonehill Earns First NEC Win Over Long Island, 10-7

EASTON, Mass. (March 25, 2023)- Seven different Skyhawks recorded hits for the Stonehill College baseball team as the squad notched their first Northeast Conference win after beating last year's conference champion, Long Island University, 10-7.

Key Moments

  • Stonehill got the scoring started in the first when the Skyhawks plated two runs courtesy of Trey Ciulla-Hall and Blaine Lidsky. Ciulla-Hall drove in the first run when he ripped a single to left but after the left fielder had an errant throw, he was able to advance to third which brought home Conor Kiely. Later in the frame, Lidsky brought home Ciulla-Hall after taking advantage of a drop by the Long Island right fielder for the early 2-0 lead. 
  • After Long Island grabbed one run back in the second off a triple from Max Sampson, the squad responded in the bottom of the second when Parks had an RBI double to deep left and increased the Purple and White's lead to three (4-1).
  • Parks again struck in the fourth with an RBI single to right that landed right in front of a sliding Sharks right fielder which allowed Taylor Gaspar to score after he singled earlier in the inning.
  • Despite Long Island getting another run in the fifth, Stonehill starter, Billy Duff kept the Sharks in check as the senior tossed five strong innings and struck out a career-best, eight strikeouts. During his start, Duff had a stretch where he struck out the side in the third.
  • With one out and runners at second and third with one out, Long Island loooked to capitalize but were shut down after Joe Castrichini retired the next two batters via strikeout and a pop up.
  • The Skyhawks utizlied a five-run sixth and grabbed their largest lead on the afternoon (10-2) highlighted by two-run RBI single from Lidsky.
  • Down to 10-3 in the ninth, Long Island cut the deficit down to three (10-7) after an RBI single from Carlton Harper. Long Island now had the bases loaded with two outs with the winning run at the plate, but Jack Iannibelli earned his frst collegiate save when he enduced a popup to center for the squad's first conference win.
