Omaha Bests Stonehill In Doubleheader

OMAHA, Neb. (March 10, 2023)- The Stonehill College baseball team opened up a three-game set with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Friday afternoon in a doubleheader and fell in both contests, 10-0 and 13-3. 

Game One: Stonehill 0, Omaha 10

Key Moments

  • Omaha started off quickly as the Mavericks posted nine runs in the second and third innings highlighted by a three-run RBI double from Drew Lechnir. The hosts tacked on one more run in the fourth when Devin Hurdle launched a solo shot and increased their lead to 10.
  • Despite the large lead, the Skyhawks pitching kept the Mavericks at bay the rest of the way when Pierce Friedman and Max Brulport combined for two shutout innings and allowed zero hits. However, Omaha's starter, Caleb Riedel was in control as he went six innings and struck out 13.

Key Moments

  • Omaha continued where it left off from game one when the hosts posted 11 runs in the first three innings which featured a three-run home run by Cam Frederick in the first that made it 3-0 at the time. 
  • After the Mavericks added on two more runs in the fifth to go up 13, Stonehill was able to grab three runs back in the seventh and trimmed the deficit to 10. After both Ryan Flaherty and Sam Kidder each drew walks in the inning, Vivona ripped an RBI single to right that drove in Flaherty for the squad's first run. For Vivona, his RBI marked the first of his collegiate career.
  • In the next at-bat, Parks sent a single to center that plated Kidder and after Parks' RBI, Ciulla-Hall brought in Stonehill's third run with his RBI single through the left side. Despite the late push, Tanner Olmstead retired Stonehill's next batter for the doubleheader sweep.

Stonehill take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the series finale either on Saturday or Sunday (depending on the weather) at a time to be determined later.
