Baseball Earns First Division I Win Over Army, 7-4

MANHATTAN, Kan. (March 5, 2023)- Going into the final inning tied at four, Ryan Flaherty launched a go-ahead three-run home run that propelled the Stonehill College baseball team to a 7-4 win over Army Sunday afternoon. With today's win, the program earned its first Division I victory.

Key Moments

  • After two innings of scoreless baseball, Stonehill struck first when Gaspar launched a solo shot to left for his second home run of the year. In the bottom of the fourth, Army had runners on first and third with two outs but Gleason got out of the jam with a clutch strikeout and maintained the squad's one-run lead.
  • In the fifth, the Skyhawks tacked on three more runs for their largest lead on the afternoon (4-0) when Ciulla-Hall hit a drive to right-center which plated Conor Kiely and Flaherty. Flaherty started things for the offense when he reached after an Army error and later in the inning Kiely ripped a single through the right side to have runners on first and second. Despite being down to two outs, Ciulla-Hall came up with the three-run shot. 
  • However, in the bottom half of the sixth, Army pulled within one thanks to a three-run inning of its own highlighted by a Sam Ruta solo home run. In the next inning, the Black Knights evened the contest at four when Derek Berg hit a homer down the left field line. 
  • Both sides would not score in the eighth but the Skyhawks came up with their second three-run inning to pull ahead, 7-4. Ryan Douglas got the rally going when he drove a single to right followed by another single from Dylan Zemotel. With runners on first and second, Flaherty got the pitch he wanted and hit the eventual game-winning home run for his second homer of the season.
  • Down to their final outs, Army threatened early in the ninth when it had runners on first and second with two outs. With the tying run at the plate, Douglas induced a pop-up to right field for the save.
