Yellow Jackets Edge Skyhawks, 2-1

Mahoney's late goal not enough for Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. (October 8, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to American International College (AIC) in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Junior forward Bonnie Boornazian (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) led the Yellow Jackets offensively with one goal and one assist.

Boornazian opened up the scoring for AIC at 28:13 receiving an overhead pass from teammate Caroline Heron (Montrose, Scotland/Montrose Academy) into the box and firing a shot past Skyhawks goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Darmouth) into the left corner of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Boornazian returned the favor at 51:22 crossing a ball into the box from the right flank that teammate Bailey Robinson (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) struck home for a 2-0 lead and her first marker of the season.

After the Skyhawks had a goal disallowed because of a foul in the box midway through the second half, Stonehill continued to stage its comeback attempt as Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) netted her fourth goal of the season on a free kick – just outside the right corner of the box – into the top left corner of the net behind junior goalkeeper Amber Swanston (Burke, N.Y./Chateaugay Central) to make it 2-1 at 87:20.

The Skyhawks rally fell short as Swanston preserved the win for AIC with a key save on a Mahoney bid with under two minutes left to play. On the afternoon, Swanston turned away four shots.

AIC led Stonehill in shots by a slim, 14-13, margin and won the corners matchup, 4-2.

Stonehill (7-4-2, 5-3-2 NE-10) travels to the University of New Haven on Sunday, October 16 for a NE-10 contest at 1 p.m. AIC (3-8-1, 3-6-1 NE-10) plays Franklin Pierce University, on the road, in NE-10 action at 6 p.m.
