Skyhawks lose first game, conference match of the season
MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 6, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team opened up its Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) slate with a 1-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire on the road on Tuesday evening.
Senior midfielder/forward Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I./Mount Hope) scored the game-winning goal at 59:18 of the second half causing a turnover just outside the box and lifting a shot over Skyhawks goaltender Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) for her first goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) turned away five shots to record her first shutout of the season while Hickey made three stops.
Stonehill outshot the Penmen 13-9 and three corner opportunities late in the second half but did not find the equalizer. The Skyhawks had five corners total to Southern New Hampshire's one.
Stonehill (2-1, 0-1 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael's for a NE-10 Conference match-up starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 9. The Penmen (2-0, 1-0 NE-10) also hit the road on Friday in a NE-10 Conference contest versus Southern Connecticut at 7 p.m.
