Stonehill Blanks Nyack in Season Opener, 5-0

Murphy's hat-trick and one assist effort leads Skyhawks past Warriors

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (September 2, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team opened up the 2011 season with a 5-0 triumph over Nyack College in non-conference action on Friday evening. Senior Alexandra Murphy (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) led the Skyhawks offensively with a hat-trick and one assist.

Murphy opened up the scoring in the 18th minute finishing on a beautiful feed from teammate Kelsey Mahoney (Rehobeth, Mass./Dighton-Rehobeth) for a 1-0 advantage.

At 30:03, Murphy registered her second of three goals in the contest beating Warriors goaltender Sarah Madsen (Tallahassee, Fla.) on an unassisted tally.

Freshman Megan Sullivan (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) recorded her first-collegiate goal moments later (32:55) as Murphy set up the first-year forward from 18-yards out for a 3-0 lead.

Murphy closed out the contest in the second half and completed her hat-trick by putting home a cross from teammate and freshman midfielder Jordan Bell (Pemberton, N.J./Holy Cross).

Bell added her first-collegiate goal (unassisted) in the second half firing a shot past Madsen from 23-yards out.

Stonehill outshot Nyack, 16-7, and also won the corners match-up 5-0.

Senior goaltender Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) posted her first shutout of the season with four saves for the Skyhawks. Madsen also turned away four shots.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow, on the road, against Caldwell College at 1 p.m. The Warriors host Assumption College in a non-conference match-up tomorrow at 4 p.m.
